Description of WorkAdvise current and prospective undergraduate students in all College of Journalism and Mass Communications majors on academic program planning in person, through walk-in's and appointments, and by phone and email. Participate in retention efforts, such as New Student Enrollment, and teaching first-year experience courses and recruitment efforts, when requested. Encourage overall well-being and adjustment to the University through providing direction as students make progress towards graduation and explore interests related to their major and career interests. Minimum Required QualificationsBachelor's degree plus two years of demonstrated experience working with students in 1:1 or group advising settings. Master's degree may substitute for 2 years of experience. Experience must demonstrate an ability to learn and stay current on complex academic requirements, policies and procedures. Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations in order to apply inclusive advising strategies. Demonstrated competency with common office software programs and ability to use a variety of technology platforms. Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, organization, and time management skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment essential.
Preferred QualificationsMaster's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling or related field preferred. Experience with College/university level students. Experience providing academic and/or social support for first generation, low-income and/or minority college students. Ability to develop and deliver programs and presentations. Experience using advising software programs and/or student information systems.
