Under the supervision of the Line Crew Supervisor, perform a variety of duties and assignments assigned to classes in the Power Line Technician series including installing, servicing, and maintaining overhead and underground electrical lines and distribution system equipment; learn and demonstrate a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assist in the training of lower level apprentice positions; performs a variety of other tasks in support of assigned area of responsibility.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Power Line Technician is the journey level class responsible for the installation and maintenance of electric utility power lines. It is distinguished from the Power Line Technician Apprentice in that it performs assigned responsibilities independently with minimal supervision.Note: Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of the Department of Transportation.SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Power Line Technician may occasionally exercise technical supervision over apprentice and lower-level staff.Essential FunctionsEXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- Install and maintain overhead and underground electrical lines.
- Dig holes and set poles; replace broken poles.
- Install or replace cross-arms, pins and insulators.
- Install and maintain switches, fuse cutouts, and lighting arresters.
- Install guy wires and anchors.
- Install and maintain transformers for overhead and underground systems.
- Install and maintain underground conduits and vaults.
- Install, maintain and repair underground electric cables.
- Install risers, potheads and underground splice connectors.
- Install and repair junctions and splices on underground cables.
- Install and maintain street lighting system.
- Operate electrical meter, line truck, and bucket trucks.
- Operate forklifts and backhoes.
- Trim trees to clear electric wires.
- Work on energized high voltage lines.
- Utilize rubber gloves and hot stick techniques.
- Perform emergency stand-by and response duties.
- Climb wooden poles to perform work.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- A valid California Class “A” Driver's License and throughout employment is required.
- Certified apprentice program certificate is required. (upload to your application).
- Up to 80 hours per year of vacation accrued for 0 - 5 years of service
- Up to 96 hours of sick leave (8 hours accrued monthly)

Classic Members hired after 6/1/2012 benefit level is 2.5% @ 55
PEPRA Members hired after 1/1/2013 benefit level is 2% @ 62 * Cafeteria Plan - Second highest HMO Family Rate to purchase medical insurance. Employees wanting to select another PERS plan may do so, the same rate applies. Employees will be required to pay any premiums over the rate.
