The Great Basin Institute, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, is hiring 1 (one) Cadastral Survey Cartography Technician under the BLM's Direct Hire Authority Program (DHA)* in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Successful completion of 11-week term will result in the applicant being eligible for the DHA-RAI Certificate of Completion, program participants that meet Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for a BLM mission-critical/hard-to-fill occupation may be directly appointed without competition to a full time, permanent position vacancy.Position Summary/Duties:
Principal Assistant to the Party Chief: Intern candidate will assist the Cadastral land surveyor in all phases of survey projects: specifically the resurvey of the Wyoming-Utah state line and or the Sweeney Ranch double corner investigation and resurvey. As a trainee the intern will be required to function as assistant to the land surveyor after an intensive daily training program. Candidate will be required to operate survey equipment, manage data, conduct record research, and represent the bureau when encountering members of the public in the field. The ability to make sensible, informed decisions on a daily basis, analyze records logically and interact (general demeanor) with peers and members of the public will be evaluated throughout this project. On occasion, the candidate may be required to operate autonomously under supervision of the land surveyor after demonstrating proficiency.*The DHA program is intended for those currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, at an accredited college or university. Undergraduate is defined as an associate or bachelor's degree program.Contract Timeline:
  • 11 week appointment beginning in June 2024, pending successful completion and passage of DOI Background Investigation

Location:
Rock Springs BLM Field Office, 280 Highway 191 North, Rock Springs, Wyoming, 82901.
No Remote option is available, 80-90% of the work is field. Remainder is daily data maintenance and research in the office prior to departing for field work (generally 1 ½- 2 hours).Compensation and Benefits:
  • Wage: $20/hr;

  • Affordable facility housing at the field office is available. Government Housing Rent Summary will be provided to the contractor upon request by the RSFO Housing Manager.
Job Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate Bachelor's (or graduate) degree in Geology, Geography, Cartography, Surveying, Civil Engineering; Natural Resources; Environmental Science; and Forestry are desirable, but all enthusiastic and interested candidates from other technical fields willing to learn will receive equal consideration.
  • Candidate must be able to:
  • Hike in flat to moderately steep to steep terrain with a pack and survey equipment.
  • Read and analyze historical data to develop logical search areas in the field.
  • Generate and manage digital data.
  • Familiarity with the public land survey system (PLSS), GIS, orienteering, surveying, etc. are desirable but are neither necessary nor required, candidates will be trained in all aspects of Cadastral field survey. (Program is immersion type training.)
  • Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver's license; and be able to successfully complete and pass a federal background check prior to starting position.
