Job Description:
Overview
The Mainframe Systems Programmer/Architect is a senior technical expert responsible for leading and supporting complex mainframe infrastructure projects. This role includes the planning, installation, configuration, and maintenance of core z/OS and related software products to support business needs. The position requires deep technical expertise in mainframe hardware and software, performance optimization, and modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, installation, configuration, and support of core z/OS and ISV products.
  • Oversee modifications, testing, implementation, and maintenance of mainframe hardware and software.
  • Manage mainframe physical components, including:
  • Central Processor Complex (CPC), processor types, and specialty engines (zIIPs, zAAPs, IFLs).
  • Hardware Management Console (HMC) for system management, LPAR initialization, CPU configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • I/O structures, Channel Path Identifiers (CHPID), and hardware resources using HCD/IOCP.
  • Manage mainframe storage systems (DASD, tape storage) and implement storage management concepts such as DFSMS.
  • Configure and support networking components and protocols in the mainframe environment, including TCP/IP and hardware-assisted networking.
  • Plan, manage, and implement hardware upgrades (new processors, memory, expanded I/O) using tools like z/OSMF workflows.
  • Oversee and optimize Parallel Sysplex environments, including Coupling Facility and shared resources.
  • Execute major z/OS and ISV product upgrades, ensuring compliance and stability.
  • Perform monitoring and performance tuning using tools like RMF and WLM.
  • Manage file systems, security, and automation using tools such as z/OSMF, NetView, REXX, and automation scripts.
  • Conduct deep-level problem analysis, including reading/interpreting system dumps (IPCS).
  • Utilize skills in z/OS, z/OSMF, FOCUS, KOMAND, CLIST, ASSEMBLER, REXX, SMP/E, DFHSM, ISH, OMVS, ACF2, CA Tools, and BMC Tools.
Required Experience
  • 7 years (within the last 10 years) in strategic planning for mainframe hardware/software roadmaps, disaster recovery, and modernization.
  • 7 years (within the last 10 years) managing and optimizing complex, high-availability Parallel Sysplex environments.
  • 7 years (within the last 10 years) leading mainframe hardware upgrades and installations.
  • 7 years (within the last 10 years) using modern integration techniques (e.G., hybrid cloud, DevOps pipelines, z/OSMF).
  • 7 years (within the last 10 years) presenting technical strategies, risk assessments, and project updates to technical teams and executives.
  • 7 years (within the last 10 years) leading technical teams and fostering professional growth.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field (required).
