Job Description:
A Mainframe Systems Programmer/Architect is a senior technical expert responsible for leading or supporting complex mainframe infrastructure projects. This includes the planning, installation, and configuration of core z/OS and other software products to support the organization's business needs. The role also involves overseeing modifications, testing, implementation, and maintenance of both hardware and software. The Mainframe Systems Programmer/Architect will possess a deep understanding of the physical components of the mainframe, including Central Processor Complex (CPC) concepts, processor types, and specialty engines like zIIPs, zAAPs, and IFLs; have expertise in using the HMC for system management, including initializing logical partitions (LPARs), making CPU configuration changes, and troubleshooting hardware-related issues; knowledge of Input/Output (I/O) structures, Channel Path Identifiers (CHPID), and the use of the Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD) and Input/Output Configuration Program (IOCP) to define and manage hardware resources; experience with mainframe storage systems, including Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) and tape storage; knowledge of storage management concepts like DFSMS; understanding of networking components and protocols in the mainframe environment, particularly TCP/IP. This includes hardware-assisted networking features and communication between processors at the hardware level; ability to plan, manage, and implement complex hardware upgrades, including new processor models, additional memory, and expanded I/O capabilities. This involves using tools like z/OSMF workflows for a step-by-step process; deep, hands-on experience in managing complex Parallel Sysplex environments, including the Coupling Facility and shared resources; proven track record of leading and successfully executing major z/OS and ISV product upgrades; monitoring and advanced performance tuning, using tools like RMF and WLM to analyze data and implement changes that significantly improve system performance; advanced knowledge of the USS environment, including file system management, security, and using tools like z/OSMF; extensive experience using scripting languages like REXX and leveraging automation tools like NetView to streamline operations; expertise in deep-level problem analysis, including reading and interpreting system dumps (IPCS) to resolve complex, low-level issues; deep understanding of mainframe hardware configuration and the ability to make changes using tools like HCD and the Hardware Management Console (HMC); and skills such as, zOS, zOSMF, FOCUS, KOMAND, CLIST, ASSEMBLER, REXX, SMPE, DFHSMS, ISH, OMVS, ACF2, CA Tools, and BMC Tools.Experience Preferred:
7 years of experience within the last 10 years of strategic planning for the development a long-term roadmap for the mainframe's hardware and software, including disaster recovery and modernization initiatives. 7 years of experience within the last 10 years in managing and optimizing complex, high-availability Parallel Sysplex environments. 7 years of experience within the last 10 years leading mainframe hardware upgrades and installations. 7 years of experience within the last 10 years with modern integration techniques, including hybrid cloud and DevOps pipelines (e.g., z/OSMF). 7 years of experience within the last 10 years presenting technical strategies, risk assessments, and project updates to both technical teams and C-level executives. 7 years of experience within the last 10 years leading technical teams and fostering team growth.Education Preferred:
4 year bachelors degree in Information Technology or a related field.
