- Fire up reporters to discover fresh angles and exclusive material
- Ensure that coverage is substantive, original and audience-focused, meaning it intersects with readers' passionate interests and leaves them wanting more
- Coach reporters to think audience-first and to express their journalism in a variety of formats (data reporting, visualizations, video), giving top priority to connecting with readers wherever they may be
- Pursue an organized, forward-thinking approach that ensures our coverage takes advantage of significant events on the education calendar, including the release of STARR test results and school ratings
- Keep track of audience metrics (above all, reader visits and new subscriptions) and think creatively about how to achieve audience goals through substantive journalism
- At least 5 years of experience in daily journalism and at least three as an education reporter
- Analytical and quantitative skills; ability to use data and metrics to back up assumptions and story planning
- Fluency in the basics of digital journalism, including SEO, headline writing, audience metrics, social listening and social promotion
- Data skills are highly desired.
