Overview:The South Carolina State Museum is searching for an Accessibility Educator! We value process over product and believe that authentic learning grows from experimentation, autonomy, and connection.Whether you're leading a planetarium show, facilitating hands-on STEAM activities, exploring South Carolina's rich and complex history, or delivering outreach programs across the state, your mission will be the same: to inspire wonder and a lifelong joy of learning in everyone you meet! Job Duties:
  • Create and lead engaging, standards-based STEAM programs for students of all ages
  • Facilitate hands-on experiences, large-group presentations, and immersive educational theater experiences.
  • Support programming across science, astronomy, history, art, and natural history
  • Travel across the state to deliver outreach programs and represent the museum at conference booths and festivals.
  • Embrace child-led, inquiry-rich teaching strategies in every environment
  • Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all learners
  • Support and coordinate accessibility efforts across the museum, including:
  • Maintaining accessibility resources and materials (e.g., fidget bins, sensory tools)
  • Organizing and participating in monthly Accessibility Mornings (second Saturday of each month)
  • Assisting with accessibility adaptations for exhibitions and educational programs
  • Helping coordinate costume character rentals and inclusive visitor experiences
  • Collaborating with schools and families to accommodate access needs
  • Managing accessibility-related contacts and communications
  • Collaborate on the development of camps, scout workshops, public programs, pop-ups, and exhibit-based experiences
  • Engage children with respect, curiosity, and empathy - and model emotional regulation and flexibility
  • Contribute to daily museum operations as needed (e.g., front desk, group visits, observatory)
Qualifications:
  • A high school diploma (college coursework in education, child development, or related field a plus)
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and curious adults
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities and a commitment to inclusive, person-centered practices and equitable learning environments
  • Willingness to learn across a broad range of STEAM and museum content
  • Strong time management and organizational skills and comfort with digital tools (especially Microsoft 365)
  • Willingness to embrace a dynamic, high-energy, always-evolving environment
ADA:
  • Must be comfortable working in low-light level environments
  • Must be able to regularly lift upwards of 50lbs.
  • Requires long periods of standing and walking around, including climbing several flights of stairs multiple times a day
  • Requires working in a variety of environments including indoor office spaces and outdoor locations.
Working Schedule:
  • Primarily weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, 8am-3pm), with availability for some Mondays, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Minimum of 2 weekdays (preference for 3+); average of 20-25 hours/week (max 29.5)
  • Must be able to work the second Saturday of every month
  • Commitment through the 2025-2026 school year (May 29, 2026) with potential for summer camp extension
