Job HighlightsAre you looking to be an integral part of the Self-Insurance (SI) program within our Insurance Services Division?As a Workers' Compensation Adjudicator 6 (WCA6) - Penalty Unit Supervisor, you will supervise our penalty unit, who are dedicated to supporting employers and protecting workers by assessing and enforcing the compliance of Self-Insurance Employers (SIE) and Third Party Administrators (TPA), that self-administer workers' compensation benefits to employees injured on the job. This position is responsible for and oversees activities which directly support the agency's priority to "Keep Washington Safe and Working".This WCA6 - Unit Supervisor will supervise approximately 5-7 staff members, including adjudicators, a medical treatment adjudicator and support staff, acting as a subject matter expert in the resolution of complex or sensitive penalty and legal issues on claims and accounts.Our top candidate must demonstrate strong capabilities in problem solving, decision making, facilitation and organizational skills. They must also have strong communication and soft skills as they will be working directly with internal and external customers. The position must work effectively to ensure staff efficiently and accurately oversee the adjudication of self-insured claims and explain in clear terms decisions made.The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is a diverse state agency dedicated to the safety, health, and security of Washington's workers.   • Implements instructions, directions, changes in program policies, procedures, tasks and changes in WACs and RCWs as assigned by management.
  • Sets clear performance goals, manages staff towards meeting goals, promotes a team atmosphere and provides timely feedback.
  • Provides expert guidance and acts as technical and professional resource to assigned staff, managers and customers in resolution of complex or sensitive penalty and legal issues on claims and accounts.
  • Identifies and manages backlogs and is responsible for developing mitigation strategies and practices to resolve backlogs, production and quality issues.
  • Creates statistical and narrative reports that are used to assess workload impacts on adjudicators and impacts on claim performance measurements.
  • Work with managers, supervisors and staff from various programs within L&I on special projects/committees
  • Facilitates change management processes by assessing problems, proposing actions and resources to accomplish change, and assisting others through change.

QualificationsRequired:Successful completion of the Department of Labor and Industries Workers' Compensation Adjudicator 2 Apprenticeship program AND One (1) year of experience as a Workers' Compensation Adjudicator 5.ORTwo (2) years of experience as a Workers' Compensation Adjudicator 4ORBachelor's Degree AND Five (5) years of experience in adjudicating workers' or crime victims' compensation insurance claims, or adjudication of time-loss payments. Experience must include one (1) year of management, leading teams or supervising.OREquivalent education/experience
  • Additional experience working with insurance claims, claims/insurance adjusting, claims investigations, disability management, claims risk management/loss control, medical billing, medical insurance, paralegal personal injury services or paramedical occupations will substitute, year for year, for required education.
AND**Must be a Washington State Certified Claims Administrator or pass the certification test within first 6 months of hire.Desired:
  • Experience in overseeing or managing self-insured claims in Washington State.
  • Experience as a lead worker, supervisor and/or trainer.
  • Experience working on projects.
