- Designs parts and assemblies for prototyping and development of mechanical components for the product line. Performs and documents technical analysis of design features. Prepares design drawings and supporting technical documentation. Consults with the engineering team, marketing staff, sponsoring surgeons, and manufacturing staff, as required, to facilitate proper design of products.
- Constructs prototype components and test fixtures. Initiates, performs as needed, and reviews in-house mechanical product testing in support of product design, regulatory submissions, manufacturing, quality, and sales support. Creates supporting documentation of testing activities. Initiates, performs (non-surgical), and reviews surgical or cadaveric product testing in support of product design and validation.
- Develops technical documents, training programs, and technical presentations. Provides surgeons training through technical presentations, sawbone demonstrations, tours, etc. Travels, as required, for professional meetings or in association with product development or technical activities.
- Prepares design reviews. Coordinates and evaluates outside or independent laboratory testing on S&N products or competitive products. Provides technical expertise for manufacturing, quality, marketing and sales, as directed. Initiates, performs (non-surgical), and reviews surgical or cadaveric product testing in support of product design and sales support.
- Works with the in-house legal department, outside legal consultants, and Government Patent Officials, as required, on patent searches, patent infringements, and patent applications and acts as technical expert on all design related materials and provides strategic analysis for continued direction.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics or other related engineering field and 3+ years of experience in orthopedic product development, electromechanical devices and controls or related field. OR
- Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics or other related engineering field and 1+ year of experience in orthopedic product development, electromechanical devices and controls or related field.
- Proficient experience with design software packages (SolidWorks, Creo) as well as finite element analyses and simulation software.
- Experience in prototype and production manufacturing processes. Familiarity with component tolerancing, GD&T, DFM and DFA.
- Proficiency in MatLab, Labview, Python or other analytical software.
- In depth experience in mechatronic device development including geartrain and general mechanical design, motion control, kinematic path planning, and drive electronics is highly desired.
- Familiarity with surgical procedures, the operating room environment, and medical technology is highly beneficial.
