Job Title: Mortgage Underwriting ManagerPosition Location: Raleigh, NC. Hybrid - 2 days a week in officeJob Summary:The Underwriting Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the mortgage underwriting department, ensuring timely and accurate loan decisions in compliance with agency guidelines. This role provides leadership to a team of underwriters, manages pipeline prioritization, supports operational efficiency, conducts weekly underwriting meetings, monitors performance metrics, fosters a culture of accountability and completes all second level and exception underwriting reviews. The Underwriting Manager monitors quality control, mitigates risk, and collaborates with Processing, Closing and Sales management to drive loans to successful funding while maintaining regulatory compliance.As a key contributor to the Coastal team, your responsibilities will be:
  • (40%) Loan Underwriting Management & Risk Assessment Oversight: Conduct second level and exception reviews on Conventional, Portfolio, FHA and VA loans per Coastal, agency and investor guidelines. Analyze underwriters' ability to appropriately evaluate borrower(s) creditworthiness, income, assets and collateral. Ensure accurate risk assessment and adherence to company underwriting policies.
  • (25%) Team Leadership & Training: Lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance and training to underwriters on government products. Conduct training sessions on guideline updates, regulatory changes, and best practices on all loan programs. Monitor team performance and provide coaching to improve efficiency and accuracy with government loans.
  • (15%) Quality Control & Compliance: Ensure all underwriting decisions align with federal, state, agency and investor regulations. Assist in internal and external quality control audits, responding to findings and implementing corrective actions. Maintaining loan quality by reviewing deficiencies and addressing underwriting discrepancies.
  • (10%) Process Improvement & Workflow Management: Identify and implement process enhancements to improve efficiency and loan turnaround times. Collaborate with operation teams to resolve underwriting related issues. Utilize Encompass (LOS) to ensure accurate documentation and reporting.
  • (10%) Pipeline Management: Oversee timely and accurate progression of loans. Monitoring daily pipeline to ensure loans are reviewed within defined service level agreements. Prioritize rush and purchase files while balancing workload. Tracking underwriting productivity and resolving escalations.

  • Ten years of conventional, FHA, and VA underwriting experience (must possess active FHA and VA underwriting designation)
  • Five years of underwriting management experience
  • Three years of Encompass experience
Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Active FHA and VA underwriting designation
