Kiernan Center Summer Camp LifeguardsJob Summary:Under general supervision, the KC summer camp counselor/lifeguard is responsible for the planning, organization, health and safety and supervision of daily activities for a group of campers and all aquatic activities associated with the operation of summer camp.Lifeguard Essential Duties
  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Implement instructional swim program developed by Camp Director
  • Actively guard, and always scan the pool area, refrain from socializing while guarding
  • Dress consistently with KRC standards including wearing swimsuit, guard shirt, whistle, and tube, while on duty.
  • Inform Camp Director of any materials and/or equipment needed
  • Adhere to directions, policies and procedures provided by camp director
  • Supervise all aquatic activities of campers
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
General Description:95% of time supervising swim activities directly with campers 5% of time performing other duties as assigned.Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language sufficiently to be able to read and understand various forms, documentation, files and information in the department
  • Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to be able to verify accuracy of record keeping and athletics information
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: calculator, copy machine, computer, and typewriter
  • Ability to receive telephone calls, responds to inquiries, and communicates with others by telephone with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Experience with and knowledge of youth programs in a summer camp setting
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills
  • Basic knowledge and ability to implement rules to basic recreation activities and games
Ergonomic Requirements:The functions of the position are usually performed standing but does involve some sitting. Stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting, walking, running, carrying and other movements may be required. All individuals will be required to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.Qualification Standards:
  • Lifeguards shall be at least 18 years of age
  • Lifeguards must have experience-supervising children or complete a training course
  • Must provide character references
  • Police background check will be required of camp positions
  • Experience in supervising children in an aquatic environment, preferred
  • Certification in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid
