- Perform and direct detailed design of new, upgraded, and expanded substations, including:
- Substation layouts, one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA systems, and communication systems.
- Grounding, lightning protection, DC loading, AC auxiliary power, bus sizing, lighting, and cable sizing calculations.
- Material procurement, construction support, commissioning, and energization.
- Prepare engineering deliverables, including technical specifications, bills of materials, and engineering drawings.
- Ensure compliance with client, departmental, and industry standards such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
- Develop project scopes, estimates, and schedules for substation projects.
- Analyze engineering issues and recommend appropriate solutions or alternate designs.
- Review construction drawings and verify compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Verify proper equipment and material use per project specifications, ensuring timely delivery.
- Prepare and file applications and supporting documentation for engineering permits, as required.
- Engineer and design lightning protection, grounding systems, and equipment replacements.
- Research and integrate new technologies to improve work processes and reduce errors.
- Participate in industry meetings (e.g., IEEE, EPRI) to influence standards and practices.
- Act as a project lead, coordinating work activities within the team and with external stakeholders.
- Communicate and coordinate project activities with engineers, designers, and client representatives.
- Convene and participate in internal schedule compliance review meetings to ensure deliverables meet deadlines and budgets.
- Support cross-functional communication across business units regarding project needs.
- Provide training and guidance to lower-level employees.
- Review and oversee the work of designers, drafters, and support staff.
- Actively support performance management, mentoring, and career development processes.
- Travel to project sites for walk-downs and data gathering to scope and develop substations.
- Conduct site visits, design reviews, plant audits, and test witnessing at manufacturer facilities as necessary.
- Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup.
- Ensure compliance with quality programs and support continuous improvement efforts.
- Prepare complex engineering calculations, research recommendations, and manage assigned budgets and schedules.
- Understand and address key client interests and drivers to deliver tailored solutions.
- Assist with business development activities, proposals, and cost estimates.
- Cross-train in all facets of the Division, preparing to fill in for anyone absent and grow in responsibility and scope over time.
- Minimum of two (2) plus years' experience in the electric utility industry performing detailed engineering for high voltage substation projects.
- Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) or graduate degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
- Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
- P.E. license preferred but not required
- Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, CDEGS & grounding calculations.
- Understanding of NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI standards.
- Demonstrated experience supporting external customers.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, clients, and external partners.
- Ability to perform tasks in both office and field settings.
- Fieldwork may involve physical activities such as walking, standing for long periods, and occasionally lifting equipment.
- Exposure to various weather conditions and environments during field audits and site visits.
