Certified - Area - Special EducationJob Number 3300053059Start DateOpen Date 08/07/2025Closing DateSummary:The Special Education Teacher works with children with varying disabilities or at-risk students to modify the general education curriculum to meet the students' individual needs, allowing them to access the curriculum.It is the responsibility of each instructional staff member to create a classroom learning environment and culture that is consistent with the Educational Plan. All staff members are responsible for the academic, social, and behavioral processes and outcomes of their students. KCCS teachers are expected to work collaboratively with other teachers, staff, and administration in order to create an outstanding learning culture for their students. Instructional Staff are also expected to follow all the processes laid out in our charter. We expect all teachers to be flexible and support the needs of the school as other duties arise.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests, including individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small-group work.
  • Assist with the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student, setting personalized goals for the student and tailoring it to that student's individual needs and abilities.
  • Review IEP with Teachers to ensure understanding of opportunities to adapt classroom curriculum and with Parents to establish transferable techniques to promote continued learning in the home setting
  • Communicate and coordinate with others involved in the student's well-being, including parents, social workers, school psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, school administrators, and other teachers.
  • Meet with teachers and parents/guardians to discuss the student's progress and to determine priorities for their student and their resource needs
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate, and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF DUTIES:
  • Hours: 7:45-3:45, regular attendance, 30-minute lunch break, 30-minute planning period, attend weekly staff meetings each Wednesday until 4:30 p.m.
  • Complete weekly lesson plans completed with all required items
  • Attend and participate in school-wide professional development sessions, implement strategies in the classroom
  • Develop positive relationships with parents, students, and KCCS faculty
  • Follow the classroom and school-wide schedule created by the Leadership Team
  • Differentiate to meet the needs of all students
  • Implement CSI Action Plan items
  • Communicate student data to the leadership team as well as parents and students (data meetings, Parent Teacher Conferences, progress reports, report cards)
  • Participate in school events and extracurricular activities
  • Follow school-wide behavior management systems
  • Adhere to the KCCS Employee and Student/Parent handbook
  • Establish effective classroom management techniques
  • Implement all items listed on the KCCS Management Checklist
  • Update student work displays monthly
  • Establish a safe, clean, organized learning environment free from hazards
  • Use technology to enhance lesson plans and instruction
  • Participate in the Mentor/Coaching program as necessary
  • Participate in 8 days of pre-service training at the start of each school year
  • Keep evidence and artifacts that support the goals in the KCCS accountability plan
  • All teachers will receive annual reviews at the end of each school year and will be held accountable for student achievement data
  • Other duties as assigned (arrival, dismissal, lunch coverage, etc)
Qualifications
  • Valid NYS Special Education Teaching Certificate
  • Master's Degree
  • Literacy Certification
  • Urban Experience preferred
  • Special Education experience - 5 years
  • Excellent record-keeping skills
  • Computer Skills (Excel, PPT)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Welcoming, warm disposition
