Join the curious.Ancestry is seeking a strategic and experienced attorney to lead our litigation and employment-related legal matters across our global operations. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this role will partner with business leaders to strategically manage and advise on pending litigation, support risk mitigation, and lead strategic initiatives for dispute prevention. The role will also work closely with the People team to ensure compliance with complex employment and labor laws while supporting the company's growth and innovation. The ideal candidate has both expertise in commercial and privacy litigation and deep experience in global employment law, with the ability to provide practical, business-minded advice across multiple jurisdictions. This role requires balancing compliance, employee engagement, and cultural considerations in a fast-moving, global environment.What you will do...Litigation & Dispute ResolutionManage and oversee all phases of complex commercial litigation, including pre-litigation investigations, pleadings, motion practice, trial preparation, and settlement.Manage external law firms in litigation and strategy, arbitration, and mediation proceedings, ensuring efficient and cost-effective management of resources.Collaborate with the Legal and other business teams to create policies and risk mitigation strategies to prevent disputes from escalating into litigation.Provide legal counsel on significant business disputes, including contract breaches and other commercial conflicts.Advise senior management on the potential impact of disputes on the company's reputation and business objectives.Manage budgets for litigation, dispute resolution, and external legal services.EmploymentAdvise on all aspects of global employment law, including hiring, performance management, compensation, benefits, accommodations, investigations, and terminations.Partner with the global People team to ensure compliance with U.S. federal, state, and local labor laws as well as local employment laws in the company's non-US locations (including GDPR employment aspects).Provide guidance on cross-border employment issues such as global mobility, remote work arrangements, immigration, etc.Monitor evolving global employment regulations, regulatory requirements and trends, and provide insights to proactively mitigate risks. In partnership with the People team, draft and update employee handbooks, workplace policies, and global codes of conduct to ensure alignment across regions.Develop and deliver training on global compliance topics (anti-discrimination, harassment prevention, data privacy in employment, workplace investigations).Support global audits (e.g., wage & hour, pay equity, health & safety).Oversee or partner with the People team on global workplace investigations to ensure fair, consistent, and legally sound processes across different jurisdictions.Collaborate with the People, Finance, and Compliance teams to support global workforce strategies and scalable employment practices.Advise on employment issues in corporate transactions, including M&A, integrations, restructurings, and global expansion.Who you are...12+ years of relevant legal experience, including a combination of top-tier law firm training and substantial in-house experience advising on litigation and employment matters-ideally in a global, consumer-facing technology company.J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school with excellent academic credentials; admission to a State Bar and an active license to practice law in that State.Strong expertise in complex commercial litigation and managing employment issues across multiple jurisdictions, including Europe.Demonstrated ability to negotiate, mediate, and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including outside counsel.Experience with global mobility, cross-border employment agreements, and multi-country compliance programs.Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience leading legal teams and mentoring attorneys and support staff.Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills; able to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization, and articulate complex legal issues clearly in both written and verbal formats.Self-starter who can manage multiple priorities and projects independently, while staying aligned with business objectives and evolving legal requirements.Helping people discover their story is at the heart of ours. We are pleased to share the base salary range for this position: $250,000 - $325,000 with eligibility for bonus, equity and comprehensive benefits including health, dental and vision.
