To learn more, please visit our websiteWhat we wantThe Veterinary Technician II, under general supervision, administers treatments to animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under supervision of the professional staff. Provides clinical assistance to the professional staff and maintains a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.What you need to knowCompensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.Other Requirements or Other Factors:Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty. Provides quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.Required Education and Experience:Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, Biomedical Science, Animal Science, or a related area or any equivalent combination of relevant experience and education.Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Basic computer skills. General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital.Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.Preferred Qualifications:One year of relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System.Two years’ technical experience in veterinary medicine.Two or more years’ experience in a veterinary medical setting.Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician.Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators, nebulizers, and endoscopic equipment.Responsibilities:PATIENT CARE: Assists faculty and students with patient care: Maintains IV catheters. Keeps patients cleaned and groomed. Administers and monitors patient diet as prescribed. Exercises patients. Performs or assists with collection of patient’s blood, urine, and tissues. Performs or assists with patient straint, handling, initial examination, patient history, proper aseptic technique, and site preparation. Places and maintains IV catheters. Places Nasogastric tubes. Monitors patient status (TPR, Vitals, and Pain, etc.). Administers fluid therapy, medications IM, IV, PO, Sub-Q along with other treatments outlined by services and provides observations on patients admitted to the Large Animal Hospital. Keeps patients cleaned and groomed. Administers and monitors patient diet as prescribe. Provides technical support for surgical and medical procedures: Assists in the recovery of anesthetized patients. Provides sling support for patients. Provides back up support to other services within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and performs additional duties as directed such as client relations, receiving and discharging patients, assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.Teaching and Clinical Research: Facilitates faculty instruction of professional curriculum to veterinary medical students with an emphasis on clinical techniques. Performs, assists, supervises, and instructs veterinary students in patient care, including patient restraint and handling, Initial examination, and collecting patient history. Performs, assists, supervises, and instructs veterinary students, Veterinary Technician I, Veterinary Technician Assistants, and Student Technicians on treatments and observations of patients admitted to the Large Animal Hospital. Provides technical support for clinical research patients.GENERAL DUTIES and INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: Provides physical restraint for safe handling of patient animals, and lifts (infrequently) heavy loads. Maintains a clean, well-organized, and stocked service area. Assures proper hospital information management. Enters hospital fees and patient data into the hospital’s electronic medical record and invoicing system, ensuring all charges generated from treatments, procedures and supplies are correctly entered. Monitors and records physiological data into patient medical records. Records all medications given. Maintains hospital stall census.REQUIRED: Training, compliance, and administrative procedures.
