The City of Roanoke's Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a Seasonal Maintenance Worker to perform manual labor in the completion of trail construction and maintenance, turf and landscape maintenance, and parking cleaning on greenways and natural surface trails. Typical tasks include but not limited to; picking up trash and debris, amenity maintenance, general landscaping maintenance, and mowing, trail building, clearing of down trees, and invasive species removal. Loading and unloading material such as soil, mulch, gravel, etc. The successful candidate will operate and maintain various types of power tools such as mowers, chainsaws, brush blades, trail hand tools, blowers, weed eaters, edger's, power washers, etc. Possession of a valid driver's license from the Commonwealth of Virginia. High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred and one to three months of related experience and/or training in performance of heavy manual work are desirable or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This is a non-exempt position.Examples of DutiesParks & RecreationParks Seasonal Maintenance and Mowing Worker II - Performs unskilled manual work in the completion of maintenance tasks on park properties and greenways. Typical tasks include mowing/trimming grass, cleaning shelters and restrooms, trash removal, weeding, general landscape maintenance, cleaning/maintenance of tennis and basketball courts, bench and table repairs, rough carpentry, light equipment repair and maintenance, concrete work, and related tasks. Loads and unloads materials such as soil, mulch, gravel, lumber and refuse, assists with special event set-ups, stages, tents etc. Operates and maintains various types of hand and small power tools such as blowers, weed eaters, saws, drills, etc. Operates small dump trucks, pick-up trucks & trailers and light motorized equipment such as riding and push mowers. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in the operation of automotive equipment and the performance of heavy manual labor; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.Typical QualificationsSUMMARYPerforms semi-skilled work in the operation of automotive and/or mechanical equipment in connection with the performance of a variety of manual tasks.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Operates dump truck loads and unloads general dirt, timber, chemical, refuse and other materialsOperates riding and push mowers cutting and trimming grassOperates tar distributor and patches holes in streetsOperates chipper and cleans area of limbsOperates truck, transports and works with crew engaged in semi-skilled repair maintenance and custodial activitiesPerforms the work of a laborer or semi-skilled laborer as assigned when not engaged as driver including rough carpentry and concrete work painting and related tasksSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
