DescriptionThe City of Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a crew lead for the Park Management team to lead and support a work crew engaged in highly-skilled park maintenance and construction activities. The successful candidate will perform work in multiple skilled trades, assign/supervise the work of maintenance workers and technicians, discuss job requirements with and receive detailed instructions from supervisor, and inspect work in progress to assure conformance with project specifications and industry best practices. Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license required. May require night, weekend, and emergency weather-related work.   • Assigns and supervises the work of maintenance workers and technicians
  • Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with codes and specifications
  • Oversees and performs park amenity construction/installation/repair projects including wood and masonry sign installations, fence and guardrail installations and repairs, concrete footing and patchwork, masonry flatwork, bench and table repairs and construction, etc. according to applicable drawings and specifications
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials
  • Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports
  • Assists with the loading, unloading, and installation of materials such as soil, mulch, and gravel.
  • Assists with inspections of playground and associated equipment
  • Performs minor repairs of buildings, floors, doors and windows, locks, cabinets, and similar items
  • Performs general park grounds maintenance including mowing, weeding, and fertilizing
  • Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services the full range of construction and park maintenance equipment including power-driven equipment, table saws, drills, concrete mixers, etc.
  • Performs trades work in multiple assigned areas at a Master level such as carpentry, concrete, and masonry
  • Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends
  • Follows established safety procedures
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESSupervises and trains a small crew of full-time and part-time staff in park maintenance and construction operations within assigned department. Will act as a section leader in the absence of the Park Management Coordinator.Typical QualificationsQUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Three to five years' of related experience and/or training in park or ground maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • Possession of a valid Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) Certification and a Registered Technician (RT) spraying license; or ability to obtain both within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to interpret basic construction plans and specifications.
  • Ability to perform computer word processing, recordkeeping, and report preparation.
  • Ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
