Description:The Division of Behavioral Neuroscience and Psychiatric Disorders within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our team. Our work focuses on understanding how social experiences (and lack thereof) shape the brain and behavior, with a focus on biological systems that are conserved in all mammals. We are also interested in how social information processing varies among individuals. Our team studies socially monogamous prairie voles, which are small hamster-sized rodents that form lifelong social attachments, show strong biparental care, and console bonded partners and siblings in distress. We maintain wild-derived as well as several genetically-engineered prairie vole lines in the laboratory, and we use an array of techniques to study their social behavior, spanning single nucleus omics, circuit tracing and manipulation, pharmacological manipulation, molecular profiling, and behavioral analysis. We also pursue collaborative projects with other labs studying diverse organisms, including non-human primates, with the ultimate aim of linking our findings to human cognition, social behavior, and neuropsychiatric disease.The ideal candidate should be highly motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, and passionate about science. We seek someone with experience in one or more of the following areas: single-cell transcriptomics, neuroendocrinology, circuit neuroscience, neuropharmacology, molecular biology, chemogenetics, optogenetics, and behavioral analysis. The ideal candidate will also be a team player eager to learn and collaborate with others, able to conduct high-quality research and maintain regular and open communication with the PI, research staff, students, and support services.Collaborate. Learn more atJOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with molecular wetlab and neuroscience techniques
  • Experience with animal handling
  • Experience with statistical analysis and software (R, Python, and/or MATLAB)
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work environment involves working with biohazardous blood and tissues
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment
  • Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat
