Summary:Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Supervisor Nursing Shift RN position is responsible for serving as a clinical resource for staff. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model. The Supervisor Nursing Shift RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice. The Supervisor Nursing Shift RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practices; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence-based practice and research findings.The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to; Responsible for management and direction of all employees assigned to their shift, in collaboration with department managers. Responsible to ensure cost effective quality patient care is given. Facilitates care coordination on their respective shift with the nursing staff. Maintains responsibility and accountability for the quality and safety of patient care throughout the hospital. Participates in direct patient care as needed and appropriate. Responsibilities:(25%)* In coordination with Nursing Manager determines the staff required, participates in staff assignment selection to make appropriate assignments to maintain continuity of
care, staff reduction, or staff recruitment to safely staff department. Maintains clinical expertise and serves as a role model to staff.(25%)* Complete focused rounding for all patients and/or within 24 hours of admission as needed. Participates in direct patient care when appropriate, ensuring that best practices are in place, and standards of care are being followed. Remains available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate. Promotes multidisciplinary rounding. Promotes/leads general medical daily safety huddle.(25%)* Collaborates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other health care providers to assist in the best care delivery, efficiency, and planning of patients. Makes recommendations as appropriate for progression of total plan of care to achieve desired outcome in a timely and cost-effective manner. Continuously promotes the most excellent patient experience possible and when appropriate works with Manager, Supervisor, and nursing staff to correct deficiencies.(10%)* Provides up-to-date patient status report on select patients to manager/shift supervisors as needed. Provides for shift report summary to administration as appropriate.(15%)* Supervisors will each have individualized special projects as assigned by VPN, general medical manager, or supervisor lead.OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Fosters cooperation and coordination of services among employees and departments.
  • Communicate openly and freely with all employees and providers in the hospital.
  • Assists in the instruction and supervision of nursing care given by staff.
  • Provides managers with input for Job Performance Reviews (JPRs), if requested. May be assigned JPR completion, if requested.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional development and advancement of clinical practice.
  • Assures compliance with all policies, procedures, regulations, standards and laws.
  • Unsafe conditions are addressed promptly.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with Physicians, surrounding hospitals, other health care agencies and community service agencies to enhance the continuity of patient care services.
  • Takes an active role in the regular leadership meetings to communicate and influence the direction of nursing services.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and My Michigan Medical Center-Sault customers and potential customers.
  • Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures:Credential: ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Equivalent Experience:Credential: BLS: Basic Life Support
