DescriptionTHIS POSITION IS TEMPORARY FOR A DURATION OF NO MORE THAN SIX MONTHS.ALL TOOLS NECESSARY TO PERFORM WORK ARE PROVIDED.BASIC FUNCTION
To troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain, repair and operate a variety of light and heavy Airport equipment and vehicles including but not limited to large snow vehicles, light and heavy trucks, mowers, mechanical hand tools, backhoes, front-end loaders, trailers, sweepers, and mechanical systems to include complex HVAC, plumbing, electromechanical, and security gate systems.Job DutiesSTATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIESTroubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs a variety of defects, malfunctions and other problems in vehicle systems and components; repairs, rebuilds and/or overhauls brakes, cooling systems, drive train components, electrical components, engines, exhaust systems, hydraulic systems, suspension and steering systems, transmissions, and other assemblies, components and systems as necessary; replaces and/or rebuilds damaged or worn parts as required.Operates all Airport light and heavy equipment, and trains employees in the proper operation, inspection and care of Airport equipment.Operates a variety of shop equipment as necessary including electric and oxyacetylene welding equipment, electronic test equipment, front-end alignment equipment, sandblasting and painting equipment, tire mounting and wheel balancing equipment, plasma cutters, band saws, metal lathes, brake lathes, hydraulic presses, air conditioning and emission test equipment.Fabricates machine parts and electronics as necessary.Performs a variety of preventive maintenance and service work on gasoline and diesel powered equipment; tunes and adjusts engines, and replaces worn parts as necessary; adjusts brakes and clutches, aligns wheels, and performs other electrical, mechanical and hydraulic system adjustments as necessary; inspects, safety checks.Road tests and operates vehicles and equipment on county public roads as necessary.Performs field repair work as required.STATEMENT OF OTHER JOB DUTIESInspects, maintains, and services airport mechanical equipment that includes gate operating systems, and a variety of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment for proper operation, leakage, temperature, alignment, wear and lubrication; diagnoses and troubleshoots malfunctions, determines appropriate remedial action and repairs equipment or calls in Airport Lead Technician for appropriate technician or service representative assistance
Performs FAA Part 139 inspections in accordance with established procedures, files daily inspection reports, and corrects minor discrepancies to FAA Part 139 standards. * Operates FAA communication and security systems.
  • Performs duties as assigned, including any duties of Airport Maintenance Technicians I, II, and III, and other related duties as required.
Minimum QualificationsEight (8) or more verifiable years of experience performing heavy truck and equipment repair work and have demonstrated the competency required of a senior mechanic. A degree or certificate from an accredited technical college/trade school may be substituted for up to two (2) years of experience. May be required to pass job related tests.A valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker and airbrake endorsements is required to operate and road test applicable equipment on public roads within six (6) months after employment. You will be a candidate for random drug and alcohol testing.Candidates for employment may be required to pass a post offer physical examination.State Certification for Vehicle Emission Testing within six (6) months after employment.National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certificates for Light, Medium and Heavy trucks are required with steady ongoing progression to Master Certification status within two years of employment.Possession of a valid First Aid Card and CPR Certification within sixty (60) days of employment is required.Must obtain certifications or licenses as directed by the employer.Per AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement: Employees in the Airport Maintenance Mechanic classification that have eight (8) or more verifiable years of experience performing heavy truck and equipment repair work and have demonstrated the competency of a senior mechanic shall be compensated at two (2) pay grades higher than the base position. A degree or certificate from anaccredited technical college/trade school may be substituted for up to two (2) years of experience.Additional InformationKNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIESKnowledge of:
  • the equipment, materials, methods, procedures and tools used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment;
  • the theory and operating principles of internal combustion engines and related systems and components;
  • the operation of and routine maintenance and troubleshooting procedures relevant to a variety of heavy equipment such as backhoes, dual axle dump trucks, front-end loaders, tractor-trailer rigs and similar equipment;
  • occupational hazards and safety rules and regulations.
Ability to:
  • troubleshoot and diagnose defects, malfunctions and other problems found in a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment, and determine the extent of repairs required;
  • repair, rebuild and overhaul a variety of gasoline and diesel engines, brakes, cooling systems, drive train components, electrical components, exhaust systems, hydraulic systems, suspension and steering systems, manual and automatic transmissions, and other assemblies, components and systems found in heavy equipment;
  • repair accessories, minor body damage and broken glass on a variety of equipment;
  • cut, weld and fabricate a variety of metal parts and body panels;
  • read, understand, interpret and work from a variety of service and repair manuals, manufacturer's bulletins, schematic drawings and related materials;
  • inspect, maintain, and service airport mechanical equipment that includes gate operating systems, and a variety of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment for proper operation, leakage, temperature, alignment, wear and lubrication;
  • diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical equipment malfunctions and determine appropriate repair requirements;
  • read, understand and comply with safety rules and regulations;
  • use a wide variety of hand and power tools, electronic test equipment, welding equipment and supplies, and other diagnostic and repair equipment skillfully and safely under a variety of working conditions;
  • operate a variety of gasoline and diesel powered heavy equipment skillfully and safely under a variety of traffic and weather conditions;
  • perform general mechanical and building maintenance work;
  • perform strenuous physical work;
  • follow oral and written instructions;
  • establish and maintain effective work relationships with superiors, co-workers, employees of other county departments, and with vendors and representatives of other agencies.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
The work involves a variety of manual labor tasks requiring some strenuous physical effort such as lifting objects weighing more than fifty (50) pounds.SUPERVISION
Employees report to the Airport Maintenance Technician Lead or Supervisor as assigned. The work varies from routine maintenance work such as doing minor tune ups and lube and tire work to doing a complete overhaul of an engine or transmission, as well as Airport mechanical system repairs of HVAC and gate systems. The employee carries out assigned tasks independently and is held accountable for the products produced. The work is performed under general supervision and may be spot checked to ensure timely completion and compliance with work orders, instructions, plans, and/or specifications. The employee may oversee the work of Equipment Service Technicians or temporary help. Specific instructions are usually given for unusual or non-routine tasks.WORKING CONDITIONS
The majority of the work is performed in an Airport equipment maintenance work center with assignments both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather at work sites throughout the Airport facility as necessary. The work may involve working at considerable heights, in confined spaces such as crawl spaces and manholes, or from ladders, a hydraulic boom truck, or scaffolding. Employees are exposed to a variety of hazards such as working near moving aircraft, traffic, around heavy equipment, or high voltage power lines, and are exposed to dust, fumes, grease, inclement weather, and so on.Employees are required to work evenings, weekends and holidays and on 12-hour emergency support shifts as necessary.
