  • The traditional painting instructor will teach full-time and in-person at Diné College.
  • Focus will be given to providing traditional painting instruction techniques to Diné students at various skill levels and afais.
  • The traditional painting instructor will cultivate in students an appreciation for Indigenous identity and art.
  • The instructor will model for students and the community the professional artistic practice.
  • Focus will be given to studio time; thoughtful interactions and reviews; and deepening the understanding in regards to art making and its potential to further concepts of Indigenous identity.
  • The instructor will need to work closely with the dean, students, and faculty of the School of Arts and Humanities to develop the arts program and the community of artists at Diné College.
  • The traditional painting instructor will work to continue the vision of Diné College and indigenous artists.
  • Traditional painting instructor needs to understand the importance of cultural sensitivity surrounding spiritual, social, and even ceremonial roles and seasons.
  • Traditional painting instructor will need to be able to manage time efficiently; have computer skills (including Canvas, the standard learning system at Diné College); and have excellent communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation & ExperienceMinimum:
  • A portfolio of evidence of art skills as a traditional painter in mediums of watercolor, acrylic, and oil, as well as other mediums of an approach modeled on professional artistic practices as an Indigenous artist.
Preferred:
  • Professional artist with at least a Master of Fine Arts, with a concentration in traditional painting, with expertise in showing work in galleries, museums, and Native Art Markets.
  • Evidence and knowledge of applicable art history, in both traditional and contemporary styles, and must be flexible with the evolution of the history of Navajo art and as well as contemporary Native American Art.
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of how to build a successful portfolio and create works for gallery, exhibitions, and markets.
  • Knowledge of traditional teaching, especially Navajo teachings.
  • Must be familiar with the Diné College philosophy, mission, and vision.
  • Must work well with students
Skills:
  • Knowledge of using various media such as oils, watercolors, acrylics, pencil and charcoal
  • Strong listening skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Willingness to work with Navajo artists and other Indigenous artists.
  • Fluent Navajo speaker, but not required
  • Must be willing to teach 2-D and 3-D Design and Sculpture, up request
Abilities:
  • Willingness to communicate skills to Diné Students, with a sensitivity for unique challenges and strengths of Diné College student body; an awareness of the cultural sensitivities surrounding the representation of certain themes, within Diné culture.
  • Self-motivation and a desire to be part of the community of working scholars and artists.
Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:
  • Travel to and from Tsaile may be necessary.
  • Physical labor is also required to lift and help students with building stretcher bars and other light duties that require hands-on abilities.
Other Requirement(s):
  • A driver's license is necessary.
  • Knowledge of the Navajo language is preferred, but not required.
  • An understanding of Diné College and its role on the Navajo Nation is also preferred.
