- Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.
- Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.
- According to manufacturers' specifications, disassembles and inspects for wear, damage and possible malfunction of ships mechanical equipment aboard vessel and in shop, including but not limited to gas, diesel, and steam engines, electrical motors and accessories including valving, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
- Opens and inspects/repair rudders and shafting which includes bearings and surfaces.
- Under supervision, removes and installs ship's propellers and shafts, using air and electrical chainfalls and various other equipment.
- Repairs and inspects pumps and mechanical seals.
- Repairs and inspects rudder, wheel, and shafting.
- Performs basic winch and windless repairs -- steam and hydraulic.
- Basic repair of evaporators.
- Tubing assembly and testing of condensers and heat exchanger.
- Diesel engine theory and repairs.
- Works from ship specifications, work orders, and applicable working drawings and blueprints.
- Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group.
- Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
- Ability to do percentages, metric and decimal conversions, multiply fractions and decimals as required for use in measurements,.
- Propulsion basics including variable pitch props.
- Pumps - types and mechanical seals.
- Steam systems.
- Underwater hull machinery, including bearings.
- Blowers, winches, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
- Shipboard systems including condensers, heat exchangers, fuel and lube oil, and cooling.
- Interaction/communication with others: Frequently- Interacts with others to ensure ongoing safety of operation. May work with several individuals in a confined space.
- Works independently or in a group: Frequently- Works in the presence of other individuals performing duties.
- Directs/supervises others: Not required.

- Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses: grinders, hand/power tools, air torches, welding machines, come-a-long, chainfall, hammer, wedges, wire feeders, compressed gas tanks, plate shears, automatic multi-head burning machine, hydraulic press and punch, large and small plate rolls, carbon saw, large surface slab for securing fabrication, overhead and jib cranes and rigging, drill presses and a complete range of hand tools.
