The Indiana School for the Deaf is accredited by AdvancED Indiana and the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). It provides services to approximately 342 students enrolled on campus. About 60% of the students live on campus during the academic year. ISD offers a full range of social activities, including sports, clubs, and organizations.Role Overview:The Interpreter provides ASL interpretive service for students, staff, and guests during normal business hours and occasional after-hours events. You may interpret in classrooms, parent meetings, business meetings, and other functions as needed.This position requires you to be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).Salary Statement:The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.A Day in the Life:The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Provides American Sign Language Interpreting at Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) in Education, Student Life, and Operations for low-risk or teamed mid-level risk assignments.
  • Provides interpreting services during and sometimes after school hours as needed.
  • Adheres to the standard Interpreting Code of Professional Conduct as set forth by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Works as a team and debriefs after assignments to analyze the effectiveness of the interpretation.
  • Educates the ISD community on effective and appropriate interpreter use.
  • Maintains effective communication with the leadership team regarding performance, behavioral, and any issues impacting the provision of interpreting services on campus.
  • Participates in all Interpreting Services Team meetings.
  • Performs all duties assigned by the Interpreting Services Supervisor.

  • a Bachelor's degree and formalized training in Interpretation, or
  • a Bachelor's degree in ASL/English Interpreting
  • 2 years of freelance interpreting, working at least 20 hours per week
  • Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
  • Working knowledge of the Code of Professional Conduct (CPC), Demand Control Schema (DCS) and Interpreting Process models.
  • Through knowledge of agency specific Interpreting policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Ability to interpret from ASL to spoken English and from spoken English to ASL effectively.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
