Primary Purpose of the Organizational UnitThe Department of Information, Library, & Research Sciences (ILRS) at the UNC Greensboro School of Education invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 1, 2026. This position is a 9-month appointment on the main Greensboro campus with promotion and tenure possibilities. Tenure-track faculty members have responsibilities in three areas: teaching, research, and service. Salary is $73,000-$76,000, commensurate with qualifications.ILRS offers Bachelors, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in the intersecting areas of information, library, and research & evaluation sciences, including a Master's of Library & Information Science degree accredited by the American Library Association. According to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, the MLIS program is ranked #2 in North Carolina and #22 across the United States. We offer a fully online, synchronous Master of Library & Information Science degree, as well as a variety of in-person and hybrid programs. This position is a 9-month appointment on the main Greensboro campus with promotion and tenure possibilities. Tenure-track faculty members have responsibilities in three areas: teaching, research, and service.
Position SummaryPosition Summary
Candidates with a specialization in collection development and collection management are preferred. Other areas of interest will also be considered, including the following:
  • Digital resource management
  • Contracting, licensing, budgeting, and vendor relations
  • Information access issues related to digital collections
  • Partnerships, collaboration, and outreach with information organizations
  • Intellectual Freedom and Intellectual Property
  • Special libraries
  • Leadership and advocacy
  • Emerging technologies and digital equity
  • Community engagement with wide range of user communities
  • Other areas of focus related to collection development and collection management
Responsibilities
  • Participate in instruction, research, publication, and other scholarly activities.
  • Teach in synchronous, online environments primarily at the graduate level, with opportunities to teach face-to-face in the undergraduate program as well.
  • Mentor and advise graduate students.
  • Provide service to the department, school, university, profession, and community.
Minimum QualificationsRequired Education and Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in library/information science, education, or related field, by start date of employment. Consideration will be given to candidates who have not yet earned their doctorate at the time of application, but who anticipate earning their doctorate in the near future.
  • Master's degree in Library & Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent degree.
  • Capacity to teach and mentor at the graduate level.
  • A record of, or the potential for:
  • Active engagement with the theories and methodologies currently informing the field,
  • Developing a program of research and scholarship in their specialty area,
  • Instructional expertise in the teaching of librarianship.

  • A record of work and leadership experience in information organizations.
  • Experience with tools, technologies, and standards used in developing and managing collections across library types and information organization settings.
  • Experience and expertise in communicative soft skills, with a people-first approach to the teaching and research of librarianship.
  • Working knowledge of social, political, and economic issues shaping information organizations.
