Under general supervision, performs venipuncture, specimen processing and a variety of support functions for technical and professional personnel within the clinical laboratory, i.e., procuring of blood specimens, performs various clerical duties as required. Accurate clinical diagnosis is important as it affects the physician’s ability to formulate, initiate, and monitor effective medical treatment. The quality of treatment and care rendered to hospital patients is of paramount importance. The duties performed by hospital staff in this position will demonstrate what is best for the patient as well as promote development of an awareness and cooperation reflecting the interrelationship of departments in caring, comforting and healing the sick and injured.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Acts as a liaison between the managers, physicians and the nursing staff to ensure that the that phlebotomy procedures are efficient and effective.
  • Adjusts work assignment schedule to accommodate changing priorities and need of the department.
  • Assist with stocking supplies immediately after arrival.
  • Collects all specimens within established protocol following laboratory and hospital’s standard operating policies.
  • Collects blood samples within prescribed time frame. Collects blood in enough quantity and of acceptable quality (correct tube, non-hemolyzed, etc.) for accurate analysis to be performed.
  • Communicates regularly with managers regarding problems or concerns.
  • Distributes blood samples and properly completed requisitions to appropriate laboratory section. Assures that reports are charted within acceptable time limits.
  • Files all documents of reports received including facsimiles appropriately and immediately.
  • Follows guidelines related to Health insurance Portability and Accountability Act, designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Heath Information.
  • Functions independently in performing required Preventive Maintenance procedures associated with instruments and equipment. Notifies immediate supervisor of identified problems or discrepancies.
  • Greets outpatients, orders tests in LIS, and acts as a receptionist at the outpatient services desk in the absence of pertinent personnel.
  • Monitors pending logs and outstanding orders appropriately.
  • Obtains all specimens (blood, urine, feces, sputum, exudates) using appropriate technique and maintaining integrity of the specimen in relationship to the test to be performed.
  • Participates in the assessment, teaching/training of staff and students (e.g. Nurses, Clinical Laboratory Science students, residents, new employees, others).
  • Prepares draw areas and phlebotomy tray for specimen procurement by stocking each day with necessary blood collection supplies. Maintains draw areas and tray in a clean and organized condition. Prepares tray before leaving so that blood collection can begin promptly at the start of the shift.
  • Prepares Surgical/Cytology specimens and referred testing for transport to appropriate laboratory.
  • Promotes culture of safety for patients through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.
  • Receives all types of specimens via pneumatic tube station, collected and delivered by nursing staff. Logs, processes and receives all patient data, orders and paperwork as appropriate.
  • Routes phone calls, handles inquiries and reports for physicians and clinical staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Utilizes technical and professional skills with a moderate amount of supervision to assess specimen collection methods based upon patient age specific criteria, disease status, and type of testing ordered.
  • Selects proper phlebotomy procurement devices appropriate to neonate, infant, toddler, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient types.
  • Recognizes specific age responses to procedural pain and anxiety and approaches each individual patient accordingly.
  • Performs special procedures based upon age specific criteria according to policy.
  • Notifies immediate supervisor of special needs or concerns with regard to age and specimen procurement.
  • Establishes contact with the physician, when necessary, to request clarification of test orders or diagnostic information.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality in all aspects of assigned duties.
QUALIFICATIONSRequired:
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Full working knowledge of Phlebotomy principles. Basic clerical knowledge preferred.
  • Language and communication skills of seeing, listening, reading, writing and speaking are necessary to effectively process and present information
  • Accurate mathematical calculations are required.
Must undergo documented competency assessment for testing personnel using the 6 procedures denoted under the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services for all testing performed.Preferred:
  • Minimum of 12 months Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred
  • Basic clerical knowledge preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand and walk as well as occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Using proper body mechanics, the employee may be expected to lift, pull, push or move patients and/or equipment. Fine motor skills are required when using hands and fingers to handle, feel or reach. Normal or corrected vision, hearing and ability to speak are necessary. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, sharp eye focus and ability to distinguish colors.
