- Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.
- Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
- Skilled in operate and perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
- Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
- Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
- Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
- Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
- While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
- Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
- A valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
- The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
- This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.
- A valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
