To provide all pupils and faculty with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth, and to aid all pupils in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Selects audio-visual materials that support established instructional objectives which induce teacher-student interaction.
  • Maintains and provides upon principal's request accurate, up-to-date, complete, reports and records, including an inventory of books, instructional materials, supplies and equipment within the assigned teaching area.
  • Becomes familiar with the collection, operates and supervises the library to which assigned. Becomes conversant with all aspects of the educational program, such as textbooks, courses of study, adopted by the Board of Education, etc.
  • Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new library materials and equipment.
  • Assists teachers in the selection of books, and other instructional materials, and makes library materials available to supplement the instructional program as well as providing materials for the professional growth of the faculty.
  • Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials and equipment, and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
  • Arrange for interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use to teachers.
  • Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of library resources of the school and the community.
  • Helps pupils develop habits of independent reference work and skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Counsels with and gives reading guidance to pupils who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
  • Arranges frequently-changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the library's patrons.
  • Discards obsolete and worn materials from the collections and maintains accurate records.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation.
  • Establishes clear outcomes for all lessons, class work, and projects. The outcomes are communicated to students.
  • Supports the program of study, using a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media and technology.
  • Serves as a model for the district's mission, vision and goals.
  • Assesses the progress of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Recognizes potential learning disabilities of students and seeks the assistance of qualified personnel.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so.
  • Plans, supervises, and provides guidance for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and serves on staff committees.
  • Analyzes and uses appropriate data to guide instruction and develop assessments.
  • Maintains a standard of performance and conduct as required by state, law, local board of education and community expectations.
  • Provides detailed plans for substitute teachers including lessons, schedules and rules regarding classroom organization, procedures and individual student needs.
  • Supervises pupils at school related functions to include on and off campus activities.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities.
  • Assists in budget preparation and in the selection of books, instructional supplies, materials and equipment.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid Tennessee Teacher's Certificate with the appropriate endorsement.
  • Successful student teaching experience if applicable.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
