The Manager of Platform Engineering – Database leads a team of database engineers responsible for the design, implementation, scalability, and reliability of enterprise database systems. This role ensures optimal performance, data security, and operational excellence across database platforms, while driving automation, standardisation, and innovation. The manager collaborates cross-functionally with product, infrastructure, and application teams to align database strategy with organisational goals and enable high availability, disaster recovery, and performance tuning best practices.Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a team of database engineers, overseeing their work and professional growth.
- Architect, develop, and optimise large-scale database systems and data infrastructure.
- Drive database automation, monitoring, and deployment processes to ensure system reliability and efficiency.
- Collaborate with software engineering, data science, and IT teams to integrate database solutions seamlessly into applications and analytics workflows.
- Define and enforce best practices for database design, development, security, and maintenance.
- Manage database performance tuning, capacity planning, and scaling strategies.
- Oversee data backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
- Stay current on emerging database technologies and recommend innovative solutions to improve system architecture.
- Manage project timelines, resource allocation, and cross-team communication to deliver database engineering initiatives on schedule.
- Ensure compliance with data governance and security policies.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in database engineering, architecture, or administration with a strong leadership track record.
- Deep knowledge of relational (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Redis).
- Proficient in database scripting, automation tools, and cloud database platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Experience managing and mentoring technical teams.
- Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines is a plus.
- You bring a minimum of 7+ years of hands-on experience in database engineering, architecture, or administration, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
- You have deep expertise with both relational and NoSQL database technologies, including performance tuning and scalability best practices.
- You are skilled in database automation, scripting, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- You excel at managing and motivating technical teams, fostering collaboration and continuous learning.
- You thrive in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities while delivering high-quality results.
- You have excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code is highly desirable.
- You are proactive, detail-oriented, and passionate about staying ahead in the evolving database landscape.
