The Surgical Assistant supports surgeons during surgical procedures. More specifically, the incumbent provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition, the Surgical Assistant performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Maintains established University and hospital directives and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
2. Preserves current knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
3. Maintains hemostasis by direct pressure, use, and application of appropriate surgical instruments, placement of ties and suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other necessary measures.
4. Assists with retracting tissues and performs wound closure.
5. Prepares surgical site and drapes and positions patient to obtain the best exposure for the surgical procedure.
6. Provides visualization of the operative sight by placing and securing retractors, packing with sponges, manipulating tissue, suctioning, irrigating, and manipulating suture materials.
7. Facilitates volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques.
8. Selects and applies appropriate wound dressing.
9. Ensures that drainage systems are appropriately secured to tissue.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field requiredExperience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience requiredCertification and Licensing:
