DescriptionThis position works within the Assessor's Office and is responsible for performing field audits and assessments of business personal property.The typical starting salary range will be $20.00 -$21.49 hourly depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations.   • Audits and assesses merchant, manufacturer, and all other business personal property by examination of the accounting and related records for ad valorem tax purposes required by State Statute and County Ordinance.
  • Makes daily physical inspections and conducts audits of commercial manufacturing and non-manufacturing business to determine tax liability on tangible personal property assets.
  • Conducts special property assessments to determine tax liability of unique categories of personal property assets.
  • Conducts business tax exemption field inspections to verify activities of businesses and assesses assets on site to determine exemption qualifications.
  • Collects appropriate data to appraise and determine value of equipment.
  • Researches, prepares, and maintains files for presentation at the Board of Equalization (BOE) and State Tax Commission (STC) hearings.
  • Performs related work as required.
Minimum QualificationsTwo years of experience in accounting, finance or business; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must posses a valid Drivers License.
The work rules for the St. Louis County Assessor's Office require all employees, whether they reside in St. Louis County or elsewhere, to remain current in the payment of their personal and real property taxes.Additional InformationSELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory.
