The role will serve as primary leadership of the veterinary team, facilitate training programs, review research protocols, and review veterinary billing for accuracy. Works directly with the Senior Director – CCR Administration.Education & ExperienceEducation and Experience Required:Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and minimum of two (2) years of experience in veterinary research operations, protocol review and regulations, with at least five (5) years in a supervisory or management role.Certifications, Licenses OR Registration Required:DVMPreferred Qualifications:Board-certified or board-eligible by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesVeterinary skills. Knowledge of animal husbandry and the biology of common animal species. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards for the ethical and humane treatment of animals in research, education, and testing. Organizational skills. Ability to relay technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.Responsibilities:
  • Principal leadership and oversight of clinical veterinary team (DVM(s) and CVT(s))
  • Assures appropriate scheduling of personnel to match species, case load, and personnel expertise
  • Works with all members of the veterinary team to assure appropriate surgical programs, diagnostic programs, and care/treatment programs are implemented
  • Daily monitoring of veterinary operation, including after business hours and on weekends and holidays. Reviews and/or assigns call schedule
  • Works with the Senior Director – CCR Administration for long-range planning and coordination of existing programs and anticipation of future needs.
  • Assures regulatory compliance with the Drug Enforcement Agency and the use of controlled substances in the institution’s veterinary practice.
  • Comprehensive veterinary reviewer for the IACUC on all protocols.
  • Facilitates the veterinary training programs in conjunction with Senior Director – CCR Administration and the IACUC
  • Directly supervise Manager – Veterinary Services and CVTs to assure proper delegation of the workflow and management of the comprehensive veterinary care program.
  • Works with the Senior Director – CCR Administration and UMMC Planning and Design and Facilities Services, to assure CCR environments are properly functioning.
