We are seeing to hire Transit Operators--no experience necessary! We will train you with the skills you need to safety operate transit vehicles that transport over 7 million passengers each year. Our Transit Operators consistently receive praise for their helpful and courteous service to our community! Our service is free to its riders.The purpose of this position is to transport customers to and from their destinations, assist them on and off the vehicle, and safely securing mobility aids in the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. This is accomplished by assuming responsibility for the safety of CHT customers and equipment and performing routine vehicle inspections to ensure proper operations.Essential FunctionsSafely operates transit vehicles to pick up and transport customers while adhering to transit vehicle route schedule and maintaining a pleasant and courteous mannerCompletes familiarization with system and safety features; geography and roadways of an assigned route and of the entire service area; traffic rules, regulations and laws, and transfer pointsProvides information on bus services to customersReceives and transmits two-way radio messages involving accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or other authorized CHT business utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure customer and individual safetyPerforms vehicle operations at varying hours of day and night. Will work outside regular business hours as required by service demandsWrites reports and completes forms as required, may prepare detailed written reports concerning accidents incidents, breakdowns and mechanical defects, as required at the end of their shiftPerforms other duties as requiredSupervision Exercised

  • Federal, state, and town traffic and safety rules and regulations
  • the geography and road system of the town and Transit coverage area.
  • Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words
  • Perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses

Education
High school diploma or equivalency or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties.Experience

Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a Class B CDL with P (Passenger Endorsement) issued by the State of North Carolina.
