Job Title Duet, Medical Support WorkerHours Required 40Job Description and Hours The Medical Support Worker (MSW) is responsible for supporting the nursing staff in administering medical care to people supported with various medical needs at the Medical Support Units, Jerry Graesser Center (JGC) and in the community. The MSW functions as a member of the individual support planning team and provides the person with the support needed to assure as much independence as possible. The MSW will encourage and provide opportunities for persons in service to make decisions and to participate in the community. The MSW is also responsible for assisting in training new employees and for transporting people to appointments and events in the community. Work assignments are varied and include daytime, evening, overnight, weekend shifts, and holidays.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Reports to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrates dependability and punctuality.The ability to provide services on a flexible basis, including working a variety of hours, locations and days including some holidays.Adheres to the agency’s core values and mission with complete regard for the dignity and respect of each person.Maintains confidentiality of people supported.Assess strengths/needs of the person receiving services. Develop, implement, and evaluate program goals.Have good communication skills to be able to communicate any medical concerns and effectively communicate with parents, guardians, and appropriate agency employees. Communicate to the supervisor any issues which may impact the individual, the family, and/or services.Recognizes emergency situations and implements appropriate emergency procedures when indicated.Administers medication as prescribed following doctor’s orders and utilizing the correct agency procedures.Submits time sheets and other paperwork promptly according to policy.Tends to the daily living needs which can include grooming and hygiene needs, grocery purchasing, menu planning, household management, cooking, care of clothing, etc.Ensures the upkeep and appearance of environments which can include household cleaning, yard care, and timely reporting of maintenance needs to supervisor.Attends daily to financial needs which can include entering transactions, establishing, balancing accounts, ensuring bills are paid on a timely basis, and assisting people in budgeting their money. Provides and promotes community access needs which can include planning and organizing recreational activities within appropriate social environments and providing/arranging transportation when needed.Attends all meetings, appointments, and training as assigned by supervisor.Conducts all duties in a professional manner which includes meeting timelines, maintaining appropriate and professional manner in all areas, and submitting quality written work products.OTHER JOB DUTIES:Assists the nurse with admissions and transfers to hospital of the people supported.Assists the nurse with treatments and cares following training and with supervision by the nurse.All other duties as assigned, which are necessary and appropriate for provision of quality services.EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:Must be at least 18 years of age.Must have a high school diploma or GED.Active on the Nebraska nurse aide registry is helpful but not required.2 years’ experience in human services preferred.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Ability to pass a criminal background and Adult Protective/Child Protective Services check.Must possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license, pass a driving record check and may, depending on agency needs, be required to have available an automobile with required State insurance coverage for purposes of transporting persons in services.Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.Ability to read, understand and effectively utilize written materials and directions.Ability to multi-task skills.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:Must be able to lift at least 70 pounds.Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, walk, sit, stand, climb, push, carry, and grasp.Will be exposed to and drive in all weather and traffic conditions.ESSENTIAL DRIVER RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides assistance to individuals boarding or exiting the vehicle.Ensures that all ambulatory individuals are seated, and seat belts are properly used and secured. Ensures that individuals in wheelchairs are properly secured in the van prior to departing.Maintain van safety in accordance with all Duet policies and procedures.Keeps van interior clean at all times.Transports or assists in transporting passengers in a safe, comfortable, and responsible manner in all weather and traffic conditions.Maintains motor vehicle through daily visual checks as required by the “Daily Vehicle Safety Checklist” and report promptly any defects or problems discovered while vehicle is in operation.
