DefinitionThe City of Colton's Public Works & Utility Services Department is now recruiting for Equipment Mechanic. This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Equipment Mechanic series including the inspection, minor and major repairs of all mechanical and power driven equipment and automobiles.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Equipment Mechanic is the journey level class responsible for performing minor and major repairs of all City mechanical and power driven equipment to include complete overhaul of engines, transmissions, hydraulic components, electrical circuits and components, and light and heavy duty equipment. Performs the mechanical inspection and repair of police, fire and other emergency vehicles, equipment and apparatus.Note: Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of the Department of Transportation.Essential FunctionsEXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Perform the full array of mechanical maintenance duties and responsibilities including preventive maintenance and minor and major overhaul of power driven and mechanical equipment.
  • Test, inspect, overhaul and repair internal combustion and other mechanical equipment including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and components, emergency lighting and warning devices, air conditioning, water pumps, air and hydraulic brakes, suspension and other systems; diagnose, disassemble, adjust and reassemble equipment.
  • Replace component parts on vehicles and equipment; perform engine tune-ups, rebuilding and overhauling; perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform detailed safety and structural inspections and repairs on a wide variety of man lifts, bucket cranes, material handling cranes, and boom trucks used for City owned public utilities and power distribution.
  • Analyze vehicle and equipment failures, determine problems and cause, and recommend solutions.
  • Perform preventive maintenance according to a regular schedule.
  • Design and fabricate special parts for vehicles and equipment; install manufactured parts.
  • Perform mechanical repairs in the field.
  • Complete a variety of records and documents of work performed and as mandated by Federal, State and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
  • Perform arc and gas welding as is necessary.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematic wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.
  • Operate shop machinery including lathes, presses, grinders, blasters, hydraulic lifts, fork lifts, welders, freon recovery and AC charging machines, tire machine, wheel balancer, battery testers and chargers, overhead cranes, vehicle scanners, digital volt/ohm meters, lab scopes, and a variety of other equipment and tools.
  • Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned.
  • Make parts purchases within prescribed limits; document, log and keep detailed records of same; reconcile monthly credit card statements and resolve discrepancies.
  • May be asked to respond to questions and concerns from the various City departments.
  • Assist, on occasion, in the training of less experienced mechanics.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining safe and clean work areas.
  • Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
QualificationsTRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent is required with some specialized training in mechanics is required.AND
Experience: Three (3) years of current journey level experience performing minor and major repair of automotive and other mechanical equipment, or the performance of related work.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a Class "A" California Driver's License.
  • Possession of a valid Refrigerant Certification.
Additional Requirements:
The incumbent may be required to work outside the traditional work schedule. May be subject to work weekends and be placed on stand-by.Additional InformationKnowledge of:

Understand and follow instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Effectively operate a variety of motor vehicles and heavy equipment on City streets. Effectively utilize the tools of the trade. Effectively operate an automotive computer, City computer and applicable software.Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an incumbent encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. The position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.Additionally, the position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The incumbent may work in outdoor weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.Recruitment and Selection ProcessQualified and interested applicants may apply for this position at www.governmentjobs.com before the filing deadline.
