This is a split position between Christiansburg High School and Montgomery Central.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identify, recruit, and instruct students deemed to have a high degree of difficulty in being promoted into the next grade level, achieving graduation, and/or making a successful transition from school to a career with advancement opportunities
  • Implement a full program of student instruction in the area of certification and employment assignment consistent with approved state and local policy regarding appropriate educational philosophy and standard curriculum under the direction of the administration
  • Serve as an advisor for the JVG Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO), Virginia Career Association
  • Assist school administration and counseling with the following duties:
  • Plan and lead lessons for all students, including those with special needs, focusing on career readiness and other skills from the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program
  • Identify new students for the program by getting referrals from school staff, parents, and an advisory group
  • Interview potential students to ensure they meet eligibility for the JVG program based on JAG guidelines
  • Administer student tests and surveys to understand their career interests
  • Develop and implement Academic and Career Plans based on student interests
  • Work closely with teachers, principals, students, and the advisory group to ensure everyone understands the advantages of the JVG program
  • Talk to local businesses, parents, community organizations, and lawmakers to garner support for JVG; this includes identifying job opportunities for students, attending events, and giving presentations
  • Advise the JVG Career Association on organizing activities such as hands-on training, guest speakers, and workshops
  • Implement activities that help students learn about teamwork, have a sense of belonging, and involvement in community service
  • Offer guidance and support to students and connect them with other services as needed
  • Take responsibility for knowing and following school division policies on mandatory reporting, discipline, and attendance
  • Ensure all paperwork, including details about student and employer interactions, is completed on time and kept in an organized system
  • Assist students with finding and keeping good jobs or enrolling in college or training programs after they graduate
  • Maintain contact and offer support to students for twelve months after they finish school to ensure they’re successful
  • Develop plans for students who don’t graduate by helping them transition to employment or further education
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions at the local and state levels
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the principal or division administrative personnel in relation to the role as JVG Specialist
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of at least 48 semester hours of college from an accredited college or university, or a passing score on the Paraprofessional Assessment Exam
  • Possess strong communication skills
  • Ability to learn to operate and maintain a wide variety of instructional equipment
  • Possess the personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, and parents
  • Ability to maintain discipline in the classroom
  • Have experience in fostering an inclusive learning environment
  • Ability to be dependable and punctual
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social services, counseling, business education, or related discipline
  • Prior experience working with youth, accompanied by knowledge of child development issues
