SeasonalDescriptionIncumbent serves as General Maintenance for the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for enforcing Park policy and performing general upkeep and maintenance of County parks, facilities and grounds.Examples of Duties
  • Applies mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and construction techniques to projects and repairs, including, but not limited to, small equipment, pumps, receptacles, switches, circuit breakers, lights, faucet, and pipe leaks, toilets, water heaters and elements, small buildings constructions, log cabin, log hewing, signage, bridges, roofs, doors and windows, cabinets, tables, welding, painting, and concrete work.
  • Contributes to general park maintenance, such as cleaning shelters, restroom and shops and trash pick-up and removal.
  • Maintains roofs and gutters, and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Operates various equipment/machinery in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, wood splitter, utility vehicles, dump truck, and pick-up truck.
  • Operates various hand and/or power tools in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, driver, ratchet, mop, broom, leaf blower, weed eater, and mower.
  • Maintains assigned grounds, including mowing, trimming, weed eating, planting, pruning, mulching, spraying, brush and tree removal, and lake maintenance.
  • Provides Park security, including, but not limited to, enforcing park rules and regulations. Participates in special events as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to meet all employer and Department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department policies and procedures and applicable OSHA safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with a variety of pesticides, herbicides, and cleaning chemicals and ability to read and understand label directions for correct mixing and use of chemical/supplies.
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepares detailed reports, such as activity reports.
  • Ability to operate various equipment/machinery in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, wood splitter, utility vehicles, dump truck, and pick-up truck.
  • Ability to properly operate various hand and/or power tools in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, driver, ratchet, mop, broom, leaf blower, weed eater, and mower.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other COunty departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to provide access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions, and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, often under time pressure.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations.
  • Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
Supplemental Information
Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including driving, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling objects, moderate to heavy lifting, working in awkward or cramped positions, close/far vision, color/depth perception, hearing mechanical sounds and handling/grasping/fingering objects.Ability to work weekends and/or evening hours.Vigo County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
