The Environmental Health Administrator selected for this opportunity will gain key public sector experience in decentralized wastewater treatment facilities that can effectively position you to pursue and obtain key, sought-after public sector jobs. We are looking for a Civil Engineer or related Professional that has 3+ years of experience and/or knowledge in siting or design of on-site wastewater treatment systems, such as septic tanks or package plants. The position will be on-site and part-time (approximately 24-28 hours per week) in the Malibu area.As an Onsite Wastewater Program Specialist, your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Supporting the planning and oversight of the City’s Wastewater Management Program, including ensuring compliance of Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS) and managing the Operating Permit Program.
  • Review of OWTS applications and documents for compliance with local, state, and City regulations.
  • Conducting inspections and investigations to ensure adherence to OWTS codes and ordinances.
  • Providing technical support and legislative review related to OWTS and environmental regulations.
  • Overseeing consultant activities on OWTS-related projects and wastewater program initiatives.
  • Developing and managing public outreach and educational efforts on OWTS topics, including creation of materials such as brochures and flyers.
  • Responding to citizen complaints and service requests, conducting investigations and follow-ups as needed.
  • Staying informed on relevant legal, technological, and policy changes, and recommending updates to City procedures accordingly.
As an Onsite Wastewater Program Specialist, you will have:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Health, Biological Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, or related
  • Minimum of 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in wastewater treatment system design, construction, inspection, and/or compliance, including experience with onsite treatment systems
  • Preferred: Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist in the State of California, a Registered Civil Engineer, a Registered Geologist, or equivalent
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship in the U.S.)
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and proof of insurance
