Senior Structural Project Engineers work as part of a multi-discipline team managing the comprehensive development of structural engineering design during all phases of multiple simultaneous projects located throughout the United States. Senior Structural Project Engineers lead a production team of structural engineers and are responsible for the quality of the technical services provided. Assignments will include performing design calculations, interpreting and preparing reports, preparing cost estimates, and producing deliverable drawing sets including foundation plans, framing plans, details, and schedules.
The Discipline Lead is responsible for the overall quality of all structural work developed on their team. The Discipline Lead must coordinate all efforts with the studio’s Director of Technical Services and Project Managers, and is responsible for the on-going quality control program of their respective structural team. The quality control program includes but is not limited to: establishing a project review schedule and time-commitment budget; reviewing structural documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines; checking structural calculations and reviewing all drawings and specifications at the appropriate stages of the designs.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Serves as a technical expert within the structural engineering team to plan the design process and solve problems of large scope and complexity.
Assists Project Managers with fee development for structural engineering portions of work.
Establishes, designs, and specifies project-appropriate structural engineering requirements.
Plans, organizes, and directs the work of Structural Engineers, EITs, and Specialists.
Attends client meetings and communicates with clients, consultants, contractors, and others during various stages of project development.
Conducts site investigations and observations.
Prepares narratives, reports, calculations, drawing and specification documents in accordance with a high degree of quality, yet with regard to project schedule and budget constraints.
Facilitates cross-discipline discussions and coordination.
Reviews structural engineering documents for quality and compliance with code and program requirements.
Participates in Construction Administration by reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to RFI’s, solving construction issues, and performing site visits to assess general conformance with the design concept.
Completes performance evaluations, mentors, and encourages the development of junior structural professionals and technicians on their team.
Develops training and educational opportunities for the structural engineering team.
Assesses and recommends improvements relative to structural engineering software, design procedures, standard details, and master specifications.
Responsible for the establishment and maintenance of structural engineering quality control processes and procedures.
Performs marketing and business development activities including building relationship with key clients and strategic partners, proposal writing, fee estimates, and client interviews.
Travel for marketing and project-related activities will be required.
ABET-accredited degree in Masters of Architectural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis
Minimum 10 years’ experience in structural engineering on a wide variety of projects within the A/E industry
Registered Professional Structural or Civil Engineer required
Demonstrated practical knowledge of codes and related industry standards (ACI, AISC, NDS, ASCE, etc.)
Production experience preparing deliverable drawing sets in Revit Structure
Experience with fast-track and early/multiple bid package delivery methods
Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency using RISA 2d and 3d, and the RAM and PCA suite of programs
Self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal, communication, writing, and presentation skills
Ability to direct and lead a production team of structural engineers and specialists
Ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately
