DescriptionThe Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission- Montgomery County Parks Department, Horticultural Forestry Environmental and Education Division is seeking a Nursery Production Assistant to join our team. We seek an energetic person with initiative and an outstanding work ethic to help with our production operations and the maintenance of our facility. This position is located within Pope Farm Nursery, (7400 Airpark Road, Gaithersburg, MD) the plant production facility that grows a wide range of plant material for Montgomery Parks.Under direct supervision, the successful candidate will work with other staff members in our various production operations. General work includes, care and maintenance of plant material (to include various container trees and shrubs and in-ground trees), facility grounds maintenance, upsizing container plant material, moving plant material, helping pull and organize plant ordersExamples of Important Duties
  • Operate power equipment (i.e. mowers, backpack blowers, weed eaters, skid steer loaders, small tractors and other miscellaneous nursery and grounds maintenance equipment)
  • Container and bare root tree and shrub liner planting
  • General care and maintenance of container plant material and field grown trees
  • Support in facility grounds maintenance related tasks
  • Irrigation system use and monitoring (in-ground trees on drip system)
  • Pulling and loading tree/plant orders for customers
  • Application of herbicides using small sprayers and tractor mounted equipment
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience in groundskeeping, nursery, landscape or 1 year of schooling in a horticulture related field desired.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Primarily works outside. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.).Hourly pay rate is $18.00 - $21.00Supplemental Information

  • This position does not include benefits.
  • The position is part-time and could be year- round or optional March thru October. Work schedule is weekdays Monday through Friday with some flexibility as determined by hiring manager.

You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
