The Mechanical Design Engineer for Custom Solutions is responsible for the engineering design and development of new and custom waterblast products. Many custom solutions are based on existing StoneAge waterblast tools, accessories, and automated equipment and are tailored to solve customer specific problems. This role requires the development and maintenance of designs, the ability to interact directly with customers to identify solutions to specific problems, and independent operation to rapidly produce custom designs. Highly engineered solutions require the project management of the solution from requirements gathering through acceptance testing and delivery to the customer. The position requires a collaborative nature, and a mechanical engineer that can communicate across multiple Engineering disciplines with fellow engineers, sales colleagues, and industry experts.This position reports to the Director of Custom Soutions. The starting salary for this position is $90,000-$115,000 per year depending on experience and education.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSCustom Engineering Requirements:
  • Lead the development of requirements for custom products based on end-user needs, and collaborate with the Sales, Business Development, Marketing and Engineering Teams.
  • Define key product requirements to ensure customer satisfaction via phone conversations, email exchanges, and video conferences.
  • Assist sales team members in suggesting appropriate equipment needed to satisfy customer requirements.
  • Estimate material/fabrication costs for custom products.
  • Identify materials, unique equipment or long-lead components required for a custom design.
  • Estimate engineering effort/time required to complete a custom design.
  • Rapidly complete designs for custom waterblast tools and automated equipment solutions.
  • Manage multiple, simultaneous, high-priority projects.
  • Work with QC to identify critical features and tolerances and ensure measurement capabilities.
  • Work with Purchasing, Outside Vendors and Internal Machine Shop as prototype parts are fabricated to ensure designs are manufacturable and easily inspected.
  • Work with Assembly Teams when custom systems are being built.
  • Assemble simple test assemblies to prove concept of new functions of custom equipment. Typically use random components found in the engineering lab.
  • Author product specification tables and user manuals.
  • Review CAD models & drawing packages of team members prior to submission to fabrication
  • Work with Production Coordination to transfer drawings for fabrication.
  • Review, test, and evaluate assembled equipment just prior to shipment to customer.
  • Incorporate feedback from the assembly team and Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) created.
Custom Solution Test Requirements:
  • When contracted by a customer, draft test plans to perform hydro blasting, draft test plans and requirements for discovering the cleaning parameters for a customer’s specific job.
  • Design and assemble test assemblies.
  • Perform testing, typically with customer on-site.
  • Author test reports to clearly convey all data collected.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.
  • 7+ years of relevant mechanical design experience.
  • Examples of personal contributions to the design of mechanical systems.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks CAD software.
  • High-level of attention to detail.
  • Experience in design for manufacturing.
  • Experience in product research and development.
  • Hands-on mechanical assembly or machining experience.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software.
Desired:
  • Experience related to product design in the waterblast industry
  • Familiarity with Waterblasting safety standards and protocols is desirable.
  • System logic design and development - electric, pneumatic, hydraulic.
  • Certifications in SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM software.
  • Experience with FEA software.
OTHER INFORMATION
  • Moderate travel will be required to customer sites as well corporate HQ in Durango, Co
  • Extended working hours may be needed at peak times or when short staffed.
