- Performance Tuning: Analyze slow queries, optimize SQL, tune engine parameters, and work with developers to improve application-level DB usage
- Operational Reliability: Ensure high availability, replication integrity, disaster recovery readiness, and robust failover strategies
- Backup & Recovery: Define, manage, and test full and point-in-time recovery plans across environments
- Security & Compliance: Implement role-based access control, auditing, encryption, and compliance standards for sensitive data
- Monitoring & Incident Response: Set up database monitoring (e.g., PMM, DataDog, CloudWatch), respond to alerts, and conduct post-incident analysis
- Upgrade & Migration Planning: Lead efforts to upgrade engines (e.g., MySQL 5.7 to 8.0), migrate workloads to cloud RDS/Aurora, or consolidate databases
- Mentorship & Documentation: Mentor junior DBAs, review change plans, and maintain documentation for operational runbooks and SOPs
- Other duties as assigned
- 2+ years of industry experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software engineering
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field or equivalent work experience
- Demonstrated experience delivering measurable improvements into database infrastructure & operations that increase operational efficiency and business objectives
- Previous experience working with cloud data platforms and modern data stacks & databases
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Cloud Database Services: AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL, Azure SQL DB
- NoSQL Exposure: MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB (monitoring, backup, basic ops)
- Monitoring Tools: Percona PMM, DataDog, pgBadger, OEM, CloudWatch
- Scripting: Bash, PowerShell, Python (for automation and tooling)
- Backup & Recovery Tools: mysqldump, xtrabackup, RMAN, pg_dump, logical/physical backups
- Security Practices: Encryption (TDE, SSL), auditing, IAM, GRANT strategies
- High Availability: Replication (async, semi-sync), failover tools (e.g., Orchestrator, Patroni, AlwaysOn)
- Automation & CI/CD: Liquibase, Flyway, Ansible, GitOps workflows
- Master’s degree
- AWS certifications or Google Cloud Platform certifications
- Industry experience in Life Sciences in General (Bonus if in Genomics)
