- Serve as Y-12 APMO's subject matter expert on fire protection
- Review and evaluate the contractor’s implementation of the fire protection program (to include field activities/walk-downs), technical products, and records to ensure they contain and conform to appropriate quality requirements and are technically accurate and complete for their intended purposes
- Provide technical guidance, responses, and support to Y-12 APMO management and internal staff
- Plan and perform assessments as directed by management
- Review progress, evaluate results, and recommend changes to processes and procedures
- Determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. These assignments may include frequent interface with the M&O Contractors and oversight activities during normal and outside of normal working hours
- Ensure assigned work is performed in accordance with Y-12 APMO requirements
- Provide support and oversight of other areas within the Y-12 APMO Operations and Security purview, as requested
- Produces high-quality written assessment reports with minimal to no revisions
- Proven experience in the design, operation, and/or maintenance of facility-related fire protection systems
- Demonstrated working knowledge and experience as a Fire Protection Engineer
- Ability to read and understand prints and process piping diagrams
- Excellent computer skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience preparing and presenting reports, including assessments
- Work may be required outside normal business hours and sometimes on short notice
- Must be willing and able to travel
- Minimum of 4-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Fire Protection Engineering from a college accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or BS degree accredited by ABET with relevant fire protection experience as described below
- Minimum 10 years’ experience as a fire protection engineer (including a minimum of 2 years as a senior engineer), preferably at a DOE/NRC regulated facility
- In-depth knowledge of principles and practices related to fire protection, including but not limited to:
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes
- Fire hazards analysis
- Fire risk assessments
- Fire protection assessments
- Fire exemptions and equivalencies
- Work packages, job plans, timely orders, and change requests
- Design packages, procurement, and subcontract documents
- Design drawings, shop drawings, design analyses, calculations, reports, test plans, inspection criteria and results, and similar)
- Nuclear facility safety basis
- Compliance with applicable fire protection-related codes and standards (NFPA, DOE, MSTS, and similar)
- Experience at commercial nuclear plants or with nuclear facility fire protection programs
- Prior experience with NQA-1 requirements
- Must be able to secure unescorted access authorization to the plant site
- Criminal Background Check
- All staff under this assignment shall currently possess or have the ability to obtain a DOE/NNSA “Q” clearance
- Pre-placement Drug and Physical Screening
