BCI has an opening for (1) full-time Senior Systems Software (Safety) Engineer in direct support of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) System Safety Program who will become part of the System Safety Team. This team provides specific, tailored, Warfare System and System Safety Engineering support to PS program in identifying requirements and system functions, test analysis, and Verification and Validation (V&V) oversite of multiple safety performer and stakeholder efforts. The successful candidate must be an energetic self-starter, able to articulate complex technical issues in a clear, concise, understandable manner in verbal and written formats, work productively independently and in team environments, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks in parallel.Job Location: Dahlgren, VATelework: MinimalJob Start Date: ImmediateShift: Flexible work schedule and only requires work beyond a normal day (0800-1600) when supporting special events, such as supporting program reviews or testing that may require a later shift or earlier shift.Experience Required:This position requires 15+ years professional experience in software engineering applied to program development, and modeling and simulation with at least seven (7) years' experience in Systems Safety. Required safety experience may have been gained in such programs as Aegis Combat and Weapon Systems, Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (ABMD), Ship Self Defense System (SSDS), Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD), NIFC-CA, DDG-1000, Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) or US Coast Guard programs in weapons systems safety, explosives safety, environmental safety, topside and cargo safety, or other related safety areas. Must have demonstrated experience in Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board (WSESRB) and the Software Systems Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP), as well as experience in database administration, computer programming, and hazard tracking databases. A formal degree in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline would be a plus. Two (2) years' experience with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.Description of Duties:Full-time members of the BCI safety program have responsibilities tailored to provide technical, operational and engineering support for the systems and software engineering team that execute analyses and assessments of safety risks. Participate in and lead engineering and safety reviews. Conduct risk assessment studies and analyses with emphasis on software risk; Prepare reports and briefs, and present such materials to formal boards including WSESRB. Perform analyses of System Safety Plans, Safety Management Plans, assessment of hardware and software changes/issues affecting systems safety and the analyses of safety test documentation/plans. Review, identify and translate technical details into terms that clearly communicate safety risk in multiple forms, such as Technical Data Packages and Hazard Records. Function as part of and provide leadership to a collaborative team of safety engineers assembled to accomplish the tasks listed above.This includes:
  • Researching, designing, developing and testing software used in DoD weapon systems;
  • Utilizing state-of-the-art model-based tools to interpret and assess design requirements for weapons safety;
  • Developing and maintaining currency and understanding of Navy and Joint ordnance, combat and weapon systems;
  • Understanding relevant safety issues;
  • Participating in engineering and safety reviews;
  • Applying the techniques of computer science engineering and math to assess user needs and establish rigorous requirements;
  • Analyzing System Safety Plans, Safety Management Plans, assessment of hardware and software changes/issues affecting systems safety; and
  • Analyzing engineering artifacts associated with the design and development of a system.
  • Analyzing safety test documentation/plans.
Travel Requirement:Travel routinely related to this position is regional and infrequent, but the applicant must be able and willing to travel in support of tasking.
