About the Duke Campus Farm:The Duke Campus Farm is a one-acre working farm, founded in 2010, which provides sustainably-grown produce and food systems education for Duke and its surrounding communities. In collaboration with our undergraduate and graduate student farm crew, academic courses, and research, we grow and harvest for our partners at , the , , , and . More important than the thousands of pounds of food that we grow, however, are the opportunities the farm provides for engaging and reimagining the ways we cultivate, access, value, and think about food. Our mission is to catalyze positive change in the food system.Position Summary:The Duke Campus Farm seeks an energetic, self-motivated people-person to support our community food security work. This will involve building and maintaining relationships with campus and community partners engaged in food security efforts, and distributing Duke Campus Farm produce in our community and on campus. The Fellow will regularly engage stakeholders to listen and understand community needs and assets, streamline our operation, and help DCF adapt to meet community needs as is feasible. The Fellow will also serve as an ambassador for the farm, representing the farm across Duke and Durham, sharing DCF's mission and vision with a range of audiences through conversation and written reflections on their experiences.As the Food Security Fellow, you will build DCF's capacity along with your own, becoming a key player in our small but mighty mission-driven organization. This is a great opportunity to think with us about the limits and opportunities of food donation, to explore careers in sustainable food systems, non-profits, and education, and to gain transferable skills in stakeholder engagement, project management, communications, teaching, and facilitation. Your work and learning will inform best practice in program development and program evaluation, both at DCF and in our peer campus farm network.This is a two-year position compensated at $41,000 annually, and includes Duke's health and dental benefits. This position will require some evening and weekend work.Eligibility requirements:
  • within three years of graduation (undergraduate, graduate or professional) from any school in the Triangle, with preference given for Duke graduates
  • self-starting and energized to support mission-driven work
  • comfortable engaging a wide range of audiences and communities
  • highly organized and able to fulfill, coordinate, and communicate multiple priorities
  • unafraid to ask for help or to ask questions
  • adept in basic Google and Microsoft skills (Drive, Sheets, Docs, Outlook)
  • enthusiastically committed to the position through June 2026
  • proven track record of driving a vehicle safely in a professional context. Our work is site semi-rural and currently inaccessible via public transit: reliable access to a vehicle is required. This job will also require regularly driving a Duke vehicle.
  • strong in their research skills, and written and verbal communications skills
  • comfortable with 10-12 hours/week of physical work in an outdoor environment
  • able to lift 25 lbs unassisted

  • strong demonstrated interest in equity and/or intersectional food systems work
  • demonstrated experience in direct stakeholder engagement, organizing, and/or facilitation
  • experience serving as an ambassador for a group or program
  • prior experience with sustainable agriculture, food security, food sovereignty and/or campus farms

Email .Community Food Security Fellow, Duke Campus Farm% of timeResponsibility/Duty1Stakeholder engagement40%Meet regularly with community food security stakeholders (e.g. Root Causes, Graduate Student Pantry, The West End Free Market, Durham Community Fridges, Iglesia Immanuel, Blue Devil Free Market, Office of Duke and Durham Community Affairs, Durham Food Security Network) to hear and understand community wants, needs, and assets; solicit feedback on DCF program effectiveness; work on point-to-point troubleshooting; and learn how DCF might further support broader food sovereignty efforts. Communicate these conversations to the broader DCF team.With the support of DCF's full-time staff, convene one public-facing event/year. This event could center food access, food justice, equity in the food system, food sovereignty, and/or climate, or consist of a substantive project in collaboration with a community partner.Work with the Field Education Manager and Assistant Director to coordinate climate resilient crop trialling and seed keeping for regional farmers of color in support of broader food sovereignty efforts.2Distribution40%Coordinate delivery to community partners as determined by Field Education Manager.Load van and deliver produce three-four times weekly. Ensure consistent, efficient and timely delivery throughout the growing season.Support harvest, wash, and pack of produce for donation 2-3 times weekly.3Communications, Administration, and Professional Development20%Reflect on these experiences in substantial public-facing writing four times over the course of the year.Support the Sloss Fellow in communications around DCF's community food security work, and engage with stakeholders via social media as appropriate.Meet weekly and as needed with Duke Campus Farm staff to discuss priorities and progress, and to give and receive feedback.Participate in 1-2 food + equity professional trainings and 1-2 additional professional development trainings of their choosing
