Location: RemoteThe Associate Director of Development shall be responsible for the leadership of a regionally structured project development team. The regional project development team is responsible for the advancement of all facets of project development within its region, and the Associate Director of Development shall manage, facilitate, and support the regional project development team in its efforts. Responsibilities include directing or executing work to complete activities associated with project development as well as coordinating with the Business Development and Finance teams on opportunities ranging from greenfield and early-stage development to commercialization-ready projects in the North American market.Responsibilities
  • Strategy and Leadership
o In coordination with the Steelhead Leadership and Extended Leadership Teams, develop and execute regional, department and company-wide strategy with respect to regional project developmento Engage with cross-functional teams to support the overall growth of the Steelhead portfolioo Escalate proposals for decision to Steelhead Leadershipo Support the professional and knowledge growth of team memberso Champion a team culture rooted in problem solving and risk identification, management, and mitigation
  • Management, Communication and Reporting:
o Lead a team of developers responsible for the origination, risk identification, and maturation of renewable energy development projectso Manage and support consistent project information tracking via internal tracking systems and reports.o Articulate risks associated with projects while safeguarding development budget and schedule and anticipating upcoming major decisionso Inform and collaborate with cross-functional teams on a regular basiso Maintain working relationships and communication with internal business development, engineering, wind resource, real estate, construction, sales, service, legal, finance, and other subject matter teams
  • Development and Project Management:
o Promote the growth of knowledge and proficiency of regional development team members in the fundamentals of renewable energy development, including land acquisition, landowner negotiation, greenfield development, project due diligence, risk identification, management, and mitigation, interconnection study processes and Generator Interconnection Agreement negotiation, and community engagemento When necessary, manage and personally facilitate the advancement of renewable energy project development efforts within the region, including land acquisition, landowner negotiation, greenfield development, project due diligence, risk identification, management, and mitigation, interconnection study processes and Generator Interconnection Agreement negotiation, and community engagemento When necessary, manage or facilitate communications and negotiations with external stakeholders, including but not limited to contractors, community members, permit agencies, utilities, and other stakeholders, including oversight of local, state, and/or federal permitting processeso Oversee and, when necessary, manage consultants - for example, environmental, engineering, aviation, and biological consultants on projects - including engagement, contracting, scope management, invoice review and approval, and discontinuation of effortso Oversee and, as appropriate, manage and represent Steelhead in the negotiation of key project agreements such as Road Use Agreements, Conditional Use Permits and Tax Abatementso Oversee and, as necessary, facilitate contracting for pre-construction activities such as preliminary geotechnical investigation and preliminary engineering.
  • Business Development
o Participate in portfolio-wide commercialization strategy formulation with Leadership and Extended Leadership Teamso As needed, coordinate due diligence, review seller-provided materials, and provide risk assessments for acquisition opportunitieso Support Business Development in executing attractive growth opportunities effectively, including development investments, acquisition and joint ventures and eventual project saleso Contribute to pipeline commercialization by being a knowledgeable resource on the essentials of project development, engaging in conversations with prospective project sponsors, and overseeing the efforts of the regional project development team
  • People and Culture
o Serve as the reporting manager for multiple direct reports - typically between three and sixo Coordinate with leadership and the People and Culture Team regarding team management issues, as necessaryQualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in business, Engineering or a related discipline; MBA or related master's degree.
  • A minimum of 6 years' experience in renewable energy development; considerable wind energy development experience.
  • Has thorough knowledge and capabilities in all the aspects of project development, including key project agreements/contracts, power sales structures, commercial markets, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), permitting, transmission and interconnection, project financing, land acquisition, and financial analysis
  • Has extensive experience in and understanding of the North American power sector, including legal/regulatory aspects, market environment, competition, stakeholders, counterparties, and other areas that impact growth initiatives.
  • Has a background in leading projects through financial close at Notice to Proceed (NTP) and Commercial Operation Date (COD)
  • Senior level working knowledge of environmental sensitivities, development challenges, permitting and interconnection processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and interface effectively with cross-functional employee groups and external stakeholders
  • Effective in organizing various responsibilities and making decisions on competing tasks in a stimulating workplace
  • Professional and creative problem-solver who is motivated to assess, solve, communicate, and implement strategic solutions to complex, multifaceted challenges
  • Skilled negotiating and problem-solving skills with emphasis on attention to detail
  • Has a well-established network of relationships among key stakeholders in the market / industry
  • Possesses effective communication and presentation skills
  • Understands financial models, risks, rewards, and what drives value in greenfield projects / acquisition opportunities
  • Has in-depth knowledge in developing, negotiating, and executing complex project agreements
  • Can be an effective spokesperson and public representative for Vestas Americas
  • Experience of project structuring including tax and accounting requirements
  • Willing to travel regularly within US and Canada (expected 20-50%)
