Position Title: Professional Tutor - School of Information Studies (SOIS)Department: SOIS and Academic Success CenterReports To: Senior Academic Director for Student SuccessLocation: On-campus (River Forest, IL)Position Summary:The academic tutor for SOIS will work with the Academic Success Center Director and the Associate Dean for the College of Business, Information Studies, and Technology (SOIS). They will develop a schedule each semester to meet the academic needs of the graduate students in SOIS. They will conduct either individual or small group tutoring sessions anywhere between 1 to 2 hours in person during the late afternoon/early evening time and/or online, either during the weekdays and/or weekends. The tutoring is on a part-time basis and can be anywhere between 4 to 10 hours a week.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist SOIS students with specific course content in the library and information. science/management, clarify concepts, and help them work through challenging problems.
  • Guide SOIS students in developing effective study habits, time management skills, and test-taking strategies.
  • Empower SOIS students to become more self-directed learners by encouraging them to ask questions, explore solutions, and take ownership of their learning process.
  • Provide feedback on SOIS student work, helping them identify strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Create a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help.
  • Document student progress and communicate with SOIS instructors or other relevant staff, such as the Graduate Academic Advisor.
  • Connect students with other campus resources, such as counseling services or disability support, when needed.
  • Facilitate online tutoring sessions and use online learning tools.
  • Teach the use of different reference systems (APA, MLA, Chicago Manual of Style).
  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance their tutoring skills.
  • Collaborate with faculty to stay informed about course content and student needs.
  • Promote tutoring services and resources to students.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in library and information science/management and demonstrated experience in the field, including libraries, archives, museums, and other information-related organizations.
  • Understanding of the application of theoretical knowledge in relation to a master's portfolio.
  • Familiarity with the courses in the graduate LIS/IM program at Dominican University and its various degrees and concentrations.
  • Knowledge of the standards aligned with the American Library Association.
  • Skills in information management, technology, and user services.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically in both oral and written forms to various stakeholders, including students, faculty, and administrative personnel.

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to spend time sitting at a desk, commute to campus, and provide virtual support with a reliable internet connection.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times

Salary and FLSA Status
  • Salary: $22.5 an hour
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, hourly, part-time 4 to 10 hours a week
