This role collaborates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of reference goals, policies, procedures, and services as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities1. Staffs the law library reference desk, according to a weekly reference schedule, during evening and/or weekend hours. Rarely and irregularly staffs daytime, weekday hours. Provides a wide range of reference and specialized research assistance, including referring patrons to legal research resources appropriate to their needs, providing appropriate instruction in the use of such resources, and providing information about alternative resources as necessary. Provides such reference services to law students, law faculty, the university community, the legal community, and members of the public in person, over the phone, and by email or other electronic communication options.2. Creates, revises, and updates research guides, bibliographies, and other law library publications and web content as needed.3. Participates in or completes other projects and activities that support reference, research, or instructional needs, such as, but not limited to, collection development and maintenance projects or research instruction sessions or presentations.4. Collaborates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of reference goals, policies, procedures, and services as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesMaster's in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program combined with knowledge of legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats. Current enrollment in an ALA-accredited Master's in Library Science program is sufficient if the candidate possesses a Juris DoctorateDemonstrated knowledge of online legal research systems (e.g., Bloomberg Law, Vital Law, Fastcase, HeinOnline, Lexis, and Westlaw) as well as web-based legal resources and print legal research materialsStrong service orientation and ability to work with a diverse patron populationExcellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skillsFlexibility and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively as part of a teamProficiency using standard MS Office applicationsAbility to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesJuris DoctoratePrevious experience in library referenceMeaningful experience in a legal or law library positionPrevious experience teaching legal research, technology, or information literacy sessions
