The Atlantic is in search of a highly collaborative, organized, ideas-driven and fast-moving editor to join the team. This person will primarily be responsible for managing a team of producers, editors, and engineers and will also provide direct editing support on episodes, as needed. This person will also work alongside the executive producer to collaborate on strategy, editorial direction, planning across shows, and new show development. We’re looking for someone who has keen news judgement and can work with hosts on complex episode ideas, and who knows how to motivate a team and keep it on schedule. This person will lead Radio Atlantic, our flagship weekly, and edit other audio offerings from The Atlantic.Work with the host of Radio Atlantic to guide editorial news coverage and provide pitches and pitch feedbackEdit weekly Radio Atlantic episodes by offering guidance of host questions, script rewrites, and structure revisions.Manage team of direct reportsWork with producers on incorporating fact-checking, copy, and legal notesSit in on tracking sessions and offer feedback during sessions and in post-productionAttend regular newsroom meetings and collaborate with other editorial departments as neededWork with the executive producer of audio to develop new projectsSupport other podcast shows with editing as neededMay be assigned to edit special projects or series as neededQualifications of the ideal candidate:A record of editing conversational and newsy episodes under deadline pressureImpeccable news judgment and keen understanding of journalism ethics12+ years of experienceExperience in working with hosts through scripting, interviewing, and story developmentProven record of successfully managing teams to meet tight deadlinesA collaborative approach to creation and an independent work ethicExperience editing narrative story telling is a plusStrong leadership skills and an interest in mentoringSalary minimum: $140,000; Salary Maximum: $180,000This position is based in New York City or Washington, DC.About The Atlantic:The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time.
