This summer program offers swim lessons to youth who wouldn’t normally have access to pools how to be safe in the water for free. There will be two sites, Shawnee High School and Central High School. As a key member of the Aquatics team, a swim instructor teaches the community’s youth pool safety and swimming techniques, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character-developing atmosphere. The YMCA will provide training at various YMCA branches.Job Skills / RequirementsPOSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Must attend monthly in services at your home branch (or at another facility if missed). In services are skills assessments and a review of rescues & safety protocols.

  • People centered, service oriented.
  • Must be able to pass a swim test consisting of a 300-meter swim (freestyle and breast stroke), a 2-minute tread (legs only) and a retrieval test at the bottom of a pool (up to 10ft deep).
  • Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid & AED certifications must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Lifeguard Certified preferred, but we will train.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous lifeguard and/or swim instructor experience preferred, but we will train if it not.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
  • Work hours as scheduled which includes beginning and ending lessons on time; remaining after class to answer participant and/or parent questions as needed, and clean up supplies.
  • Provide supervision of guests in aquatic areas & on decks.
  • Enforce rules & regulations of the facility.
  • Respond to emergency situations & assist in communicating during emergencies.
  • Maintain skills at a test-ready level.
  • Advise management of unsafe conditions.
  • Perform daily pool maintenance duties to ensure facility safety & cleanliness.
  • Act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Attends mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
  • All other duties as assigned and appropriate.

  • Must be able to remain in water for long periods of time.
