In this position, the advisor counsels students on academic policies, course planning, and application requirements for many majors at UW Bothell. The position is also responsible for assisting students in making identity conscious and values based informed decisions concerning personal, educational, and professional goals. This includes guiding and motivating students to identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Advising
  • Work independently to manage a caseload of students' records to ensure their requirements for admission to an undergraduate major and to graduation are completed in a timely manner.
  • Advise students on matters of general curriculum, course and degree requirements, transfer credit evaluation, major choice, and graduation.
  • Recommend appropriate academic course loads and course selections, and assist students with developing an educational plan of academic courses to achieve their intended educational and career goals.
  • Encourage students to make informed academic decisions with use of advising tools including but not limited to Degree Maps, Degree Audit Records, MyUW resources, and Academic Catalog information.
  • Analyze, interpret, and explain student data, transcripts, and placement results, as well as university policy and procedures.
  • Update information for student academic files as needed, and conduct regular academic audits on select students.
  • Advise students about procedures for petitions, academic warning and probation, and graduation.
  • Support students' registration concerns and assist with enrollment management.
  • Maintain confidentiality due to nature of interactions with students, faculty, and other academic personnel.
  • Make appropriate referrals to departments and other college resources.
  • Support new student orientation and new student program activities where advising is concerned, providing information about different programs and options to new students and their families.
  • Develop strong working relationships with faculty and staff across campus, and actively collaborate with campus-wide departments for advising, student life, student housing, and career services.
  • Participate as an active member of the university academic advising community and maintain compliance with advising standards, mandatory advisor trainings, engage in available and approved professional development opportunities as recommended.
  • Remain current with student development theories, University of Washington Bothell major and graduation requirements, and with international, national, and statewide higher education trends and student needs through research and professional advisor networks.
  • Serve in a leadership capacity to various committees and groups, including advising policy groups, school committees, and DEI efforts.
  • Provide training and guidance to advisors in Advisor I and II positions, at the direction of their Assistant Director.
Advising Program Lead Advisor
  • Serve as a lead advisor to an academic major or minor, staying apprised of all requirements for the program, consulting with school faculty and staff as needed, and relaying important program information to other advisors.
  • Participate in program-related committees as needed, including program committee and curriculum committees
  • Attend recruitment and outreach events when an advising liaison is needed.
  • Support program-specific orientation.
  • Monitor course enrollment and assist with enrollment issues as requested by the program.
  • Manage program petitions as requested by the program.
  • Assist with graduation application and DARS corrections.
  • Provide Off-site program support if needed.
  • Regularly interface with school and program faculty and staff to connect the advising office with the program as needed.
Student Staff Supervision
  • Hire, train, and supervise student employees servicing the Academic Advising Center. This can include both peer advisors and other student assistants.
  • Manage student employee performance issues.
  • Provide mentoring to student employees on both professional and personal goals.
  • Hold regular meetings with student employees and provide professional development opportunities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, humanities, social sciences or related field.
  • Foundational background in student services, with four years' experience in advising, counseling, mentoring, or academic coaching at the college or university level.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and various web applications.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including attention to detail and documentation, ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, ability to gather and analyze information skillfully, and comfort and efficacy in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills, including a learning mindset open to new approaches and ideas, ability use reason when dealing with emotional topics, and be thorough in communication and documentation.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in education, Student Development, Counseling, or related field.
  • Experience hiring, training, and supervising student employees.
  • An understanding of student development and its impact on advising.
  • Experience with and appreciation of an intrusive and appreciative approach to advising.
  • Experience working with students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • This is a hybrid position, with access to an office space suitable for student advising meetings; adjacent to other members of the advising team.
  • The scheduled hours for this position align with the open office hours of the advising center, generally 8am to 5pm. This position requires infrequent evening and weekend work for campus events.
